Summer 2008 Course Descriptions

All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. Classes with alternative External Link delivery modes (Web based, cable TV, correspondence, etc) are noted in the Schedule at the section level.  The complete list below is a good indicator of what may be offered over the next few years (contact department about offerings).  For explanations of course elements see the Key to Course Descriptions.

Spanish (SPNV)  Department Info

SPNV 323 -- Intermediate Composition for Heritage Learners I  (3 units)
Description:  Moving beyond the mechanics of composition in Spanish, the course focuses on the rhetorical conventions used in the elaboration of the essay. Grammatical concepts are treated within a functional framework and emphasis is placed on the logical organization of ideas in the essay.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  SPAN323
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: SPNV 323 or SPAN 323
Prerequisite(s):  SPAN 253 or placement by examination. Native Speakers should take SPNV/SPAN 323 instead of SPNV/SPAN 325. Credit will be given for SPNV/SPAN 323 or SPNV/SPAN 325, but not for both.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

SPNV 325 -- Intermediate Grammar and Writing  (3 units)
Description:  Essential points of grammar, with emphasis on syntax and development of writing skills.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  SPAN325
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: SPNV 325 or SPAN 325
Prerequisite(s):  SPAN 251.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

SPNV 340 -- Spanish Phonetics  (3 units)
Description:  In-depth study of articulatory phonetics with emphasis on both theory and practical applications for non-native speakers of Spanish. (Taught in Spanish).
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  SPAN340
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: SPNV 340 or SPAN 340
Prerequisite(s):  SPAN 330.

SPNV 350 -- Readings in the Literary Genres  (3 units)
Description:  Please contact UA South Spanish Department for course information.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  SPAN350
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: SPNV 350 or SPAN 350
Prerequisite(s):  SPAN 330 or SPAN 333.
Identical to:  LASV 350.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

SPNV 399 -- Independent Study  (1-4 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Equivalent to:  SPAN399
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

SPNV 401 -- Survey of Spanish-American Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to Spanish-American literature from the colonial to the contemporary period.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

Prerequisite(s):  SPAN 350. Credit will be given for SPNV 401 or SPAN 401 but not for both.

SPNV 403 -- Mexican and Mexican-American Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Studies of major works by Mexican and Mexican-American writers. Taught in Spanish although a small portion of the readings may be in English.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

SPNV 433 -- Mexican and Mexican-American Civilization Through Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Study of the culture, history, literature and oral tradition (corridos, legends) of the Mexican and Mexican American.

SPNV 441 -- Children's Literature in Spanish  (3 units)

SPNV 448 -- Mexican and Mexican-American Film  (3 units)
Description:  Major films by Mexican and Mexican-American directors. Relationships of the cinema to Mexican and Chicano literature and culture.

SPNV 449 -- Topics in Spanish, Spanish-American, Mexican, and Mexican Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Monographic, generic, work or author courses in any area of Spanish, Spanish-American, Mexican or Mexican-American literature.

Equivalent to:  SPAN449
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: SPNV 449 or SPAN 449

SPNV 450 -- Conversation and Writing Skills  (3 units)
Description:  Study and practice in formal and informal usage of Spanish as oral communication.

SPNV 473 -- Spanish for the Classroom Teacher of Spanish  (3 units)
Description:  Practical Spanish for the elementary and secondary school subject-matter teacher who uses Spanish as the medium of instruction.
