SPAN 103 -- Oral skills for Heritage Learners  (4 units)
Description:  For students who have passive or receptive skills in Spanish, but who encounter difficulty in speaking. The curriculum fosters fluent conversation skills and covers basic grammatical elements such as the use of verb tenses, gender assignment of irregular nouns, false cognates, etc.

SPAN 201 -- Third Semester Spanish  (4 units)
Description:  Continuation of Spanish 101 and 102 or by placement exam. As the first semester of the second year Spanish, this course focuses on a short review of the materials studied in the first year courses. It expands on those points with a more in-depth study of the Spanish language and culture. Content-based approach integrates grammar and culture in a functional use through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course further develops grammatical accuracy in the use of the simple tenses: present, future, and conditional and of particular importance is the perfection of the use of the past tense: preterit and imperfect. Compound tenses such as the present perfect, past perfect are also developed in this course. Students gain the ability during this course to deal with more complex and abstract situations in the foreign language. Language use encouraged by way of communicative activities rather than a sequence of linguistics units. Audio, video, and computer materials incorporated.

SPAN 202 -- Fourth Semester Spanish  (4 units)
Description:  Continuation of Spanish 101, 102, and 201 or by placement exam. As the second semester of the second year Spanish, this course is designed to provide insight into the literature and culture of the Spanish speaking countries. Themes are developed by content-based cultural activities, which provide awareness in the Hispanic culture, and encourage students to formulate opinions on a variety of contemporary issues through authentic readings, discussions and writing. This course reviews the grammatical concepts in a more sophisticated way and analyses more complex syntactic structures considered within a functional whole such as the subjunctive moods, etc. The teaching approach integrates grammar and culture in a functional use through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Classroom activities stress communication across the four skills with a strong aural, oral and written component. Audio, video, and computer materials incorporated.

SPAN 203 -- Writing and Oral Skills for the Native Speaker of Spanish  (4 units)
Description:  Designed for students who learned most of their Spanish in a home environment. Introduces students to written Spanish. This course fulfills the University's foreign language requirement.

SPAN 204A -- Intensive Spanish  (8 units)
Description:  Offered in Guadalajara only. SPAN 204A is the equivalent of SPAN 101 and SPAN 102. SPAN 204B is the equivalent of SPAN 102 and SPAN 201. SPAN 204C is the equivalent of SPAN 201 and SPAN 202. Recommended for highly motivated students and/or those with experience in another Romance language.

SPAN 210 -- Latin America on Film  (3 units)
Description:  This course will focus on the portrayal of the historical, cultural and socio-political reality of Latin America in film. It will also incorporate the representation of literature on film.

SPAN 253 -- Elementary Composition for Heritage Learners I  (3 units)
Description:  For students who can speak and understand Spanish with some degree of fluency but who are unfamiliar with the writing system. Covers basic issues in orthography such as silent letters, written accents, and common misspellings. (Native speakers should take 253 instead of 251; credit is not allowed for both.)

SPAN 301 -- Translation and Interpretation: Social Justice and Practice  (3 units)
Description:  Professional, social justice, sociolinguistic, & cognitive aspects of Translation & Interpretation. Includes language policy and social justice goals to providing language services for limited and non-English speaking populations, role of translators & interpreters, simultaneous & consecutive interpretation, role of norms in legal translation, meaning of translation, health care interpretation & translation, business & technical translation, observation of professional settings, translation and interpretation practice. This course is a prerequisite for the following courses: MAS 306, MAS 308, MAS 309, MAS 311, MAS 408, MAS 409.

SPAN 303 -- Elementary Composition for Heritage Learners II  (3 units)
Description:  A continuation of Spanish 253. Develops writing skills focusing on elements of grammar, continues to practice spelling and accent use. Students become familiarized with grammatical terminology and also learn how to use punctuation conventions in the heritage language. Prerequisites: SPAN 253 or placement by examination

SPAN 305 -- Intensive Spanish, Fifth and Sixth Semesters  (6 units)
Description:  Offered in Guadalajara only. For those who have completed four semesters of college Spanish or equivalent. Will cover the 5th and 6th semester Spanish. A complete immersion in the study of intermediate Spanish, teaching all four skills.

SPAN 306 -- Beginning Simultaneous Interpretation  (3 units)
Description:  This course begins the in-depth study of simultaneous interpretation (continued in Advanced Simultaneous Interpretation). Its focus is (1) building conceptual knowledge in legal/medical/business contexts and (2) language and interpreting competence. Students are introduced to professional, nationally accepted standards of practice and performance using authentic materials and contextually meaningful situations.

Description:  This course begins the in-depth study of the theory & practice of consecutive interpretation & sight translation (continued in Advanced Consecutive Interpretation). It reviews legal and medical concepts and covers policy & law relevant to interpreter practice, theory, skill development, and special issues in legal, medical, and business settings using authentic materials & contextually meaningful situations.

Description:  Moving beyond the mechanics of composition in Spanish, the course focuses on the rhetorical conventions used in the elaboration of the essay. Emphasizes different genres of writing in the heritage language, focusing on rhetorical strategies used in persuasive and argumentative writing and culminating in the elaboration of a research paper on an issue of relevance to the Spanish-speaking world using mostly Spanish sources. Description:  This course continues the in-depth study (begun in "Translation and Interpretation: Social Justice and Practice") of the theory & practice of consecutive interpretation and sight translation. It focuses on a review of complex legal and medical concepts; policy and law relevant to interpreter practice; theory; skill development; and special issues in interpretation in legal, medical, and business settings—using authentic materials & contextually meaningful situations. SPAN 930 -- Supplementary Registration  (1-9 units)
Description:  For students who have completed all course requirements for their advanced degree programs. May be used concurrently with other enrollments to bring to total number of units to the required minimum.
Grading:  Grade of K is awarded for this course except for the final term.
