HNRS 195A -- Leadership: Voices and Vision  (1 unit)
Description:  This interactive colloquium focuses on the subject of leadership. Students will learn to recognize when leadership is a goal, understand how to achieve it and gain confidence in pursuing it. Leadership is defined broadly and the course is aimed to help students become leaders in a variety of contexts, from families to work groups to communities or even on a national level. The leadership tools you develop in this course will also allow you to achieve your own personal goals.  This is a First-Year Colloquium Course.

Description:  This course is designed to aid in Honors students’ transition to the university by strengthening social, academic, and cognitive skills. The goal of the course is to engage students’ enthusiasm and talents in the challenges of university life.  This is a First-Year Colloquium Course.

HNRS 295A -- Intellectual Pursuits: Preparing for Nationally Competitive Scholarships  (1 unit)
Description:  This course is intended to prepare sophomore and junior students to compete for nationally competitive scholarships, including the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge, Truman, Fulbright, Goldwater and Udall. Formerly the domain of students at elite private institutions, nationally competitive scholarships are increasingly accessible to the strongest students at state-supported institutions. Intellectually capable students who write well, speak well, and have an understanding of, and opinions about, national and world issues are competitive for these scholarships. We will address why students might wish to pursue a nationally competitive scholarship, how they can be most competitive in the process, and why pursuing a scholarship is valuable whether or not a student receives one.

HNRS 295B -- An Encounter with Poets and Their Poetry  (3 units)
Description:  This Honors course is taught in conjunction with the semester-long UA Visiting Poets and Writers Reading Series. Class members read and discuss current work of the invited writers during class time and attend six Wednesday night (8 pm) public readings sponsored by the Poetry Center. Most readers then attend our class for a conversation about poetry and the life course that has prepared them for their work. In addition to the critical study of contemporary poetry, class members experiment over the semester with their own creative writing. This laboratory of production and discussion prepares each honors student for the final project, a portfolio that assembles critical responses to the visiting poets’ work and original explorations of the genre itself.

Description:  This course will focus on the multicultural intersection of histories, locale (environment and geography), social status (class, ethnicity, race, nationality), gender in a particular nation. The course will focus on how its rich environments, literatures, cultures and histories that intertwine.

Description:  This colloquium is designed to review & select a book to be used in The Honors College Common Reading program for the following summer. Description:  Through the use of case studies and film, students will explore historical and contemporary issues of controversy. Assigned research projects will emphasize improving and enhancing research, writing, critical thinking and presentation skills. In the process students will familiarize themselves with the rich educational resources available at the University of Arizona.
