Description:  Concepts of plant ecology illustrated with examples from Arizona. Topics include taxonomy, species distribution, community classification and dynamics, and human influences.

Description:  Structure and function of western U.S. range land plant communities focusing on vegetation dynamics and anthropogenic influences. Laboratory includes classroom and field identification of communities and plant species.

RA M 436A -- Grazing Ecology and Management  (2 units)
Description:  This course examines how herbivores interact with their environment and how understanding of these interactions is applied to the management of grazing animals or the environments they inhabit or both. Emphasis is placed on the scientific basis for grazing management decisions and management designed to accomplish a variety of outcomes.

RA M 446 -- Vegetation Management of Wildlands  (4 units)
Description:  General techniques for managing, reclaiming, and restoring vegetation on rangelands and woodlands will be addressed with a focus on local and regional management. Students will work to develop solutions through chemical, biological, mechanical, and cultural land treatments.

Prerequisite(s):  RNR 316.

RA M 456A -- Rangeland Inventory and Monitoring  (4 units)
Description:  Techniques of mapping and measuring attributes of vegetation and soils for inventory and monitoring of range lands. Interpretation of data with respect to range condition and trend, watershed protection, value for livestock and wildlife habitat.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Special course fee required:  $21.50.
Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); RNR 202, RA M382, RNR 321, RNR 316 or equivalent; satisfaction of the upper-division writing proficiency requirement.
Typical structure:  1 hour discussion, 3 hours laboratory, 2 hours lecture.

RA M 487 -- Rangeland Management Plan  (2 units)
Description:  [Taught odd-numbered years] Conduct a field inventory, develop management alternatives, and provide environmental and economic analyses of alternative management proposals in a written plan. 6L. All-day field trips.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).

RA M 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

RA M 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

RA M 599 -- Independent Study  (1-5 units)

RA M 619 -- Ecology of Savannas, Shrublands, and Woodlands  (3 units)
Description:  [Taught Spring semester in even-numbered years] The functional ecology and dynamics of biogeographically diverse savanna, shrubland and woodland ecosystems will be examined. Interactions among co-occurring life forms and growth forms will be emphasized with in the context of climate, soils and disturbance.
