Summer 2008 Course Descriptions

All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. Psychiatry (PSYI)  Department Info

PSYI 499 -- Independent Study  (1-12 units)
Description:  Course of study will be determined by Faculty member and student. Example areas of study include psychopharmacology, neuropsychiatry, spychotherapy, child psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and cognition, memory and aging.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  consent of instructor.
May be repeated:  for a total of 12 units of credit.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

PSYI 599 -- Independent Study  (1-12 units)
Description:  The goal of this elective is to allow the student to work with a particular faculty member in pursuit of a particular field of study in psychiatry.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  for a total of 16 units of credit.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

PSYI 800 -- Research  (1-16 units)

PSYI 803 -- Clinical Clerkship  (6-9 units)
Description:  Students are assigned patients in inpatient clinical settings. They obtain and record a complete history, mental status and physical examination. The students are expected to study the course of their patients and record their observations in daily progress notes. They work closely with clinical staff in the diagnosis, specific treatment, ward management and discharge planning involving their patients. In addition, they are introduced to community and legal services for the chronically ill, the suicidal and the violent patient. Those students wishing to take an additional three-, four-, or six-week clerkship in psychiatry may elect to do so (PSYI 810).

Description:  Goals: To understand how addiction, eating disorders, and PTSD are evaluated and treated.

Prerequisite(s):  PSYI 803 and prior approval of instructor.

PSYI 815H -- Forensic and Correctional Psychiatry  (1-16 units)
Description:  Learning objectives include a good understanding of the role of the forensic expert, various legal standards such as competency and insanity, and an appreciation of the mentally ill patient in a jail setting.

Prerequisite(s):  completion of PSYI 803 and consent of instructor.

PSYI 815I -- Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (Phoenix Children's Hospital, Phoenix)  (1-16 units)
Description:  Goals: To understand basic child-adolescent behavioral syndromes through assessment processes and to become familiar with treatment.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
Prerequisite(s):  PED 803.

PSYI 815V -- Clinical Evaluation and Treatment of Sleep Disorders  (1-16 units)

PSYI 816A -- Geriatric Neuropsychiatry  (1-16 units)
Description:  To provide students with a directed clinical experience in a field that represents the convergence of internal medicine, psychiatry, and neurology. The student will develop proficiency in obtaining a complete neuropsychiatric history and performing a directed examination (mental status, cognitive screening, and neurological screening) in the geriatric patient. As well as become knowledgeable about major psychiatric disorders, personality disorders, and neuropsychiatric disorders that affect the elderly patient. The student will become knowledgeable about psychopharmacologic treatment for these disorders, and familiar with other treatment modalities, including ECT and psychotherapy.

PSYI 891A -- Psychiatry  (1-16 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of instruction and practice in actual service in a department, program, or discipline. Teaching formats may include seminars, in-depth studies, laboratory work and patient study.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
May be repeated:  for credit 2 times (maximum 3 enrollments).
