MUS 100 -- Basic Musicianship  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the rudiments of musical notation, harmony, rhythm, and melody.

MUS 101A -- Exploring Music through Piano for General Students  (3 units)
Description:  This is an interactive course in music that explores the creative nature and process of making music at the piano. A goal of the course is to provide a basis for lifelong valuing of the musical experience and music making so that the student will continue with the piano as a source of self-expression and growth. The course introduces and develops an understanding of the basic concepts of music and the fundamentals of the keyboard. Improvisation and composition, sight-reading, playing by ear, harmonization, solo and ensemble keyboard repertoire, and applications of music technology will be creatively explored throughout the course.

MUS 101B -- Piano Class for General Students  (1 unit)
Description:  Studying piano pieces and music basics. Class activates are concentrated on repertory pieces, piano skill and technique for sight-reading. Students are required to review and progress with basic of music in outside practice hours.

MUS 102A -- Class Guitar for General College Students  (1 unit)
Description:  Introduction to basic guitar playing techniques for the general college student, with emphasis on literature and styles of playing of current interest to students. MUS 102A and MUS 102B are offered both semesters.

MUS 102B -- Class Guitar for General College Students  (1 unit)
Description:  Development of guitar skills including sight reading, accompanying, tone production and other classical techniques. MUS 102A and MUS 102B are offered both semesters.

MUS 103 -- Class Voice for General College Students  (2 units)
Description:  Practical training in singing, with emphasis on basic skills of breathing, tone and diction; repertory to include folk, current, and classic songs in English.

MUS 105L -- Operatic Stage Training  (1 unit)
Description:  An introduction to the fundamentals of movement, acting and stage terminology as related to the performance of opera and operetta. Emphasis on practical experience, including in-class study of selected operatic scenes.

MUS 107 -- Understanding Music through Listening  (3 units)
Description:  Development of listening skills through introductory study of Western art music, world music, and jazz.

MUS 108 -- Survey of Music, Meaning and Culture  (3 units)
Description:  Continuation of 107, with emphasis on Western art music, particularly that of the Medieval through the Baroque era, and the music of other cultures.

MUS 109 -- Rock and American Popular Music  (3 units)
Description:  This course surveys the history of rock music in a way that underscores the power of music as a means of communication. In addition to studying the various sound characteristics and styles associated with rock, we will look at the specific ways that the development of rock music illustrates basic operations of music in general: the role music plays in shaping social (including economic) interaction, and the relationship between musical production and worldview.

Description:  American popular music associated with Tin Pan Alley and the American musical theater through the recordings and interpretations of Frank Sinatra.

MUS 330A -- History of Western Music  (3 units)
Description:  Detailed study of the history of music in Western civilization from its origins to modern times; its relationship to general cultural development.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

MUS 337 -- Survey of Mexican Folk Music  (3 units)
Description:  Examination of the traditional folk music of Mexico. Covers the history and evolution of the mariachi as well as the vast potpourri of Mexican music tradition. A working knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.

MUS 346 -- Sound and Technology  (3 units)
Description:  This course is designed to provide those students with little or no experience in sound technology with basic comprehensive knowledge of sound generation, sound manipulation and the application of sound to creative work in the fine arts. Within this context, the term sound is used in the broadest sense and includes sounds produced through a variety of mediums including music, the environment, and technology. The course is designed for all students in the College of Fine Arts. Basic technological competence is a requirement for everyday life in the modern world and this is especially true for all artists in the disciplines of Art, Dance, Media Arts, Music, and Theater.

Description:  For students who have completed all course requirements for their advanced degree programs. May be used concurrently with other enrollments to bring to total number of units to the required minimum.
Grading:  Grade of K is awarded for this course except for the final term.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.
