Summer 2008 Course Descriptions

All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. Classes with alternative External Link delivery modes (Web based, cable TV, correspondence, etc) are noted in the Schedule at the section level.  The complete list below is a good indicator of what may be offered over the next few years (contact department about offerings).  For explanations of course elements see the Key to Course Descriptions.

Language and Culture in Education (LCEV)  Department Info

LCEV 402 -- Home School Community Connection  (3 units)
Description:  Analysis of issues in the home, school and community connection for ELL students. This course will cover issues that affect ELL students directly, such as parent involvement, intercultural aspects of the home, school, community connection. It will investigate cultural and socio-linguistic aspects of education and how they affect success in school.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Students must have been accepted into the University of Arizona South education program or already have a teaching certificate.

LCEV 404 -- Cultural Diversity in Education  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to aspects of culture that affect education. An overview of different cultures will serve as the basis for discussing issues pertaining to school achievement.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
May be convened with:  LCEV 504.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

LCEV 408 -- Methods of Teaching English to English Language Learners  (3 units)
Description:  Methodology for the teaching of English to the English Language Learner (ELL). This course will familiarize the students with a historical overview of different methods as well as influences from the field of psychology. It will introduce students to what is currently considered quality methodology in ELL education.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Students must have been accepted into the University of Arizona South education program or already have a teaching certificate.
May be convened with:  LCEV 508.

LCEV 410 -- Foundations of TESOL  (3 units)
Description:  This course will address first and second language acquisition theories. It will review seminal research as well as instructional applications for ELL students.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Students must have been accepted into the University of Arizona South education program or already have a teaching certificate.

LCEV 414 -- Literacy Acquisition for ELL (English Language Learners) Students  (3 units)
Description:  Analysis of reading and writing situations encountered by ELL students; phonological, semantic, and syntactic aspects of instruction; methods and materials.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
May be convened with:  LCEV 514.

LCEV 418 -- Bilingual Methods  (3 units)
Description:  This course analyses and evaluates methods and materials used in bilingual education programs, effective strategies in first and second languages, concurrent and separate language approaches and cooperative models.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Students must have been accepted into the UAS education program or already have a teaching certificate.

LCEV 428 -- Bilingual Curriculum  (3 units)
Description:  Theory and application of curriculum development to bilingual instructional programs: designs, organizational patterns, materials and media, change strategies, and evaluation. Graduate-level requirements include a ten article annotated bibliography on topics related to the course.

Prerequisite(s):  Students must have been accepted into the UAS education program or already have a teaching certificate.

LCEV 443 -- Children's Literature from the Hispanic World  (3 units)
Description:  A survey of Hispanic Children’s Literature for English speakers. (Students do not need to know Spanish. Bilingual students have access to some bilingual readings)

LCEV 494A -- ELL (English Language Learners) Practicum  (3 units)
Description:  A reflective analysis and application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and practice, in the teaching of ELL students.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Students must have been accepted into the UAS education program or already have a teaching certificate.
May be convened with:  LCEV 594A.
Usually offered:  Spring.

LCEV 499 -- Independent Study  (1-12 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  for a total of 12 units of credit.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

LCEV 502 -- Home School Community Connection  (3 units)
