Summer 2008 Course Descriptions

All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. Classes with alternative External Link delivery modes (Web based, cable TV, correspondence, etc) are noted in the Schedule at the section level.  The complete list below is a good indicator of what may be offered over the next few years (contact department about offerings).  For explanations of course elements see the Key to Course Descriptions.

Italian (ITAL)  Department Info

ITAL 101 -- Elementary Italian I  (4 units)
Description:  Listening, speaking, reading, and writing; introduction to the basic structures and vocabulary of Italian. (Does not count toward the Italian major or minor.)
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit (not for grade).
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

ITAL 102 -- Elementary Italian II  (4 units)
Description:  Listening, speaking, reading and writing; an introduction to the basic structures and vocabulary of Italian, continuation. (Does not count toward the Italian major or minor.)
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
Prerequisite(s):  ITAL 101 or placement.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit (not for grade).

ITAL 102Z -- Intensive Elementary Italian  (4 units)
Description:  Course represents an accelerated course covering the material of both 101 and 102 (and not merely an accelerated 102 class) therefore, it is not recommended for those students who have already taken 101. Does not count toward the Italian major or minor.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  language major or demonstrated language proficiency.
Usually offered:  Fall.

ITAL 199 -- Independent Study  (1-4 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

ITAL 201 -- Intermediate Italian I  (4 units)
Description:  Continued skill development; reinforcement of basic language skills.

ITAL 230B -- Italian Culture: Baroque Age to the Present  (3 units)
Description:  Italian Culture: Baroque Age to the Present. Required for the major or minor in Italian Studies option. Taught in English.

ITAL 240 -- Italian Folklore and Popular Culture  (3 units)
Description:  A study of the oral narratives (fairy tales, legends, saints' legends) and customary crafts of ordinary Italian and Italian Americans.

ITAL 250A -- Italian Literature in Translation: The Middle Ages  (3 units)

ITAL 302 -- Advanced Italian Composition  (3 units)
Description:  Course emphasizes advanced reading and writing skills in Italian.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  ITAL 201 and ITAL 202, or ITAL 202Z or equivalent. ITAL 301 is not required but is suggested.

ITAL 310 -- Spoken Italian in Cultural Context  (3 units)
Description:  Course emphasizes advanced verbal language structures as found in Italian culture.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  ITAL 301and ITAL 302, or equivalent.

ITAL 320 -- Written Italian in Cultural Context  (3 units)
Description:  Course emphasizes advanced written language structures as found in Italian culture.

Description:  Comprehensive study of a particular aspect of Italian culture: Fascism, Resistance and Reconstruction. Counts toward the major or minor in Italian or Italian Studies. Taught in English.

ITAL 330B -- Italian Americana in Fiction and Film: Crossing Oceans  (3 units)
Description:  Comprehensive study of a particular aspect of Italian culture: Italian Americana in Fiction and Film: Crossing Oceans. Counts toward the major or minor in Italian or Italian Studies. Taught in English.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

ITAL 330D -- Women in Italian Society  (3 units)
Description:  Comprehensive study of a particular aspect of Italian culture: Women in Italian Society. Counts toward the major or minor in Italian or Italian Studies. Taught in English.

Prerequisite(s):  two courses from Tier One, Individuals and Societies (INDV 101, 102, 103).

Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.

ITAL 410 -- Italian Fiction/Film  (3 units)
Description:  Course presents an introduction to Italian narratives, either visual or literary.

Prerequisite(s):  ITAL 310 and ITAL 320, or equivalent.

ITAL 414 -- Teaching of Modern Languages  (3 units)
Description:  Specific methods, objectives, organization of subject matter and evaluation in modern languages.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Identical to:  TTE 414; TTE is home department.

ITAL 420 -- Italian Civilization  (3 units)
Description:  Historical, geographical, social, and artistic aspects of the development of the culture of Italy.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  ITAL 202.
Usually offered:  Summer.

ITAL 496A -- Topics in Advanced Italian Studies  (3 units)
Description:  An in-depth study of an aspect of Italian literature or culture. Variable topic course. May be repeated for credit as topic changes.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
May be repeated:  for a total of 12 units of credit.
Usually offered:  Fall.

ITAL 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ITAL 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course for two sequential semesters. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
May be repeated:  for a total of 9 units of credit.

ITAL 499 -- Independent Study  (1-4 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

ITAL 599 -- Independent Study  (1-4 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599, 699, or 799.
