All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. HUSV 301 -- Introduction to Human Services  (3 units)
Description:  An overview of human services. Examination of the history and current directions of human services, service delivery models, professional issues, systems and ecological perspectives, and the helping process.

Prerequisite(s):  Admission to the UA South BAS program or consent of instructor.

HUSV 370 -- Early Childhood Classroom Processes and Guidance  (3 units)
Description:  Principles of classroom management, behavior guidance, assessment strategies, and planning procedures for young children in preschool through 3rd grade.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Acceptance into UA South BAS Early Childhood Education Concentration.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).

HUSV 371 -- Parent, Family, and Community  (3 units)
Description:  The modern family and its relationships with emphasis on young children and their ecosystems, interprofessional collaboration for early intervention.

HUSV 372 -- Development of the Young Child  (3 units)
Description:  Examines issues and aspects of social, emotional, and cognitive development in young children in preschool through 3rd grade with application to classroom settings.

Prerequisite(s):  Acceptance into UA South BAS Early Childhood Education Concentration.

HUSV 373 -- Early Childhood Environments  (3 units)
Description:  Principles of planning and creating an appropriate learning environment for infants, toddlers, and young children.

HUSV 374 -- Teaching Exceptional Children in Early Childhood  (3 units)
Description:  This course emphasizes the development of competencies required to teach exceptional students in the areas of language, reading, writing, math, study skills, and other content area learning. Emphasis will be placed on the development and implementation of individualized educational programs, the teaching-learning process, general principles of teaching and best instructional practices, and specific instructional methods that may be used with students with diverse learning needs. Emphasis will also include the professional and management responsibilities of teachers working with exceptional children.

Typical structure:  1 hour lecture, 1 hour workshop, 1 hour discussion.

HUSV 381 -- Emergent Literacy and Development  (5 units)
Description:  This course investigates oral language development, written language development, phonemic awareness, and phonological development. Strategies for promoting growth in all aspects of literacy development for young children in preschool through 3rd grade.

Prerequisite(s):  Acceptance into UA South BAS Program and Early Childhood Concentration.

HUSV 382 -- Early Childhood Literacy  (3 units)

Description:  Integrated curriculum development and assessment of science and math process skills and learning for young children preschool through 3rd grade.

HUSV 386 -- Creativity and Social Learning  (5 units)
Description:  Integrated curriculum development and assessment of social and aesthetic learning for young children in preschool through 3rd grade.

HUSV 399 -- Independent Study  (1-5 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Students must be admitted to the UA South BAS program or consent of instructor.
May be repeated:  for credit 2 times (maximum 3 enrollments).

HUSV 402A -- Spanish for Health Professionals  (3 units)
Description:  For Health Professionals with little or no previous Spanish experience in the context of nursing. The curriculum fosters the development of all language skills at a novice level of communication with Spanish-speaking patients in a primary care setting, including cognates, basic structures, development of basic skills in interviewing for health assessment purposes.

Prerequisite(s):  Students must be accepted into the University of Arizona as an undergraduate or graduate student.

HUSV 402B -- Spanish for Health Professionals  (3 units)
Description:  For health professionals with some basic experience in the context of nursing or who have already taken HUSV402A. The curriculum fosters development of all language skills focusing on linguistic accuracy through emphasis on recombination of grammatical structures, initiating and responding to spontaneous interactions orally and in writing.

Prerequisite(s):  Students must be accepted into the University of Arizona as an undergraduate or graduate student.

HUSV 410 -- Introduction to Group Procedures and Theory  (3 units)
Description:  Examination of theories, practices and issues relevant in groups. Emphasis on the following group topics: communication, membership, group norms and deviancy, leadership, systems view, developmental stages, self-help, and peer counseling groups.

Prerequisite(s):  HUSV301; Admission to the UA South BAS Human Services Concentration or consent of instructor.

HUSV 420 -- Introduction to Crisis Intervention  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the crisis intervention process for para-professionals. Topics include assessments, intervention, and referral. Examination of: settings for crisis intervention, crisis intervention theories, types of crisis issues and clients.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  HUSV301. Admission to the UA South BAS program or consent of instructor.

HUSV 430 -- Substance Abuse Theory and Counseling  (3 units)
Description:  Examination of issues surrounding substance abuse. Course topics include: impact of use on the individual, families and society, models of addiction, drug classification, assessment methods, intervention models, support groups, confidentiality, and ethics.

HUSV 440 -- Introduction to Psychopathology  (3 units)
Description:  An overview of mental disorders, etiology, prevalence, diagnostic criteria. The impact of disorders on those diagnosed and their families. An introductory course for those planning to work in paraprofessional settings.

HUSV 450 -- Human Services: Multicultural Perspective  (3 units)
Description:  Multicultural theory and principles within human service settings, including in development and multicultural paraprofessional counseling.

HUSV 493 -- Internship in Human Services  (3-6 units)
Description:  Specialized field experience in a human services setting.

Prerequisite(s):  HUSV301, FSHD 401, FSHD 405, FSHD 408; Admission to the UA South BAS Human Services Concentration and consent of instructor.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).

HUSV 494 -- Practicum  (1-8 units)
Description:  The practical application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and the collection of data for future theoretical interpretation.
