All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. GRK 101 -- Elementary Classical Greek I  (4 units)
Description:  Introduction to ancient Greek for students of the Bible and of the classical authors.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.

GRK 102 -- Elementary Classical Greek II  (4 units)
Description:  Second semester Greek.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
Prerequisite(s):  GRK 101.

GRK 103 -- Elementary Modern Greek I  (4 units)
Description:  Development of skills in conversation, composition, and reading with emphasis upon audiovisual practice.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
Usually offered:  Fall.

GRK 104 -- Elementary Modern Greek II  (4 units)
Description:  Second semester modern Greek.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
Prerequisite(s):  GRK 103.

GRK 199 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.

GRK 201 -- Intermediate Classical Greek I  (4 units)
Description:  Selections from classical Greek chosen in accordance with the student's needs and interest.

GRK 202 -- Intermediate Classical Greek II  (4 units)
Description:  Selections from classical Greek.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  GRK 201.

GRK 203 -- Intermediate Modern Greek I  (4 units)
Description:  Pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary of modern Greek; development of skills in conversation, composition, and reading; emphasis on aural-oral skills.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  GRK 104.

GRK 204 -- Intermediate Modern Greek II  (4 units)
Description:  Conversation, composition, and reading.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  GRK 203.

GRK 391H -- Honors Preceptorship  (1-3 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of instruction and practice in actual service in a department, program, or discipline. Teaching formats may include seminars, in-depth studies, laboratory work and patient study.

GRK 402 -- Greek Reading Course  (3 units)
Description:  Readings in major Greek authors including Homer, Plato, and the historians and dramatists.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); GRK 202.
May be repeated:  for a total of 6 units of credit.

GRK 412 -- Readings in Greek Philosophy  (3 units)
Description:  Extensive readings in Greek in one of the following areas of Greek philosophy: the pre-Socratics, Plato's ethic and epistemology, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); GRK 202.
May be repeated:  for a total of 6 units of credit.
Identical to:  PHIL 412; PHIL is home department.

GRK 422 -- Readings in Greek Drama  (3 units)
Description:  Close reading in Greek of either (1) tragedy-one play each by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides or (2) comedy-two plays of Aristophanes, one of Menander.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); GRK 202.

GRK 424 -- Homer  (3 units)
Description:  Close reading of selections from the Iliad and Odyssey in Greek and an introduction to the critical secondary literature.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); GRK 202.

GRK 430 -- Readings in Greek Historians  (3 units)
Description:  Selections from Herodotus and Thucydides with an introduction to the critical literature. Readings in Greek.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

GRK 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.

GRK 498H -- Honors Thesis  (1-3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
May be repeated:  for a total of 9 units of credit.

GRK 499 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
