ART 104 -- Three-Dimensional Design  (3 units)
Description:  Study of 3-dimensional principles and spatial relationships. Introduction to 3-D conceptionalization on computer.

ART 119 -- Contemporary Art and Theory  (3 units)
Description:  This course will investigate contemporary art and theory as it relates to Modernity, "Avant Garde", Modernism, The other, Postmodern, international society, and new technology.

ART 203 -- Survey of Contemporary Studio Art  (3 units)
Description:  Presents an overview of Art Department offerings in studio art and the history and theory of contemporary visual arts practices. Examines links between the arts, pop culture, and society at large.

Description:  Drawing from the model and other subjects to develop pictorial and perceptual skills.

ART 223 -- Introduction to New Genre  (3 units)
Description:  Introductory course provides instruction in hands-on technical skills with theory and contemporary practice in this field. Class projects include mixed-media, video, creative writing, performance, and audio. Both group and individual projects.

ART 241 -- Beginning B&W Darkroom Photography.  (3 units)
Description:  Principles of photographic processes, aesthetics, theory and criticism. A 35mm camera required. This is a black and white darkroom class.

ART 273 -- Beginning Art Practices in Ceramics  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to clay as a fine art medium with main emphasis on historical and contemporary ceramics and art as sources of inspiration. Basic process of hand building, surface treatments, kiln firing, and wheel-throwing basics. Critiques, readings, lectures, tests on ceramic terminology and safety. Some writing required. ART 358 -- Design: Cultural and Language  (3 units)
Description:  This course examines issues, principles, methodologies, theories and visual language of graphic design, illustration and new media. Student will be required to keep a journal, write a research paper, and create four visual projects and on-line discussions.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Description:  Introduction to the concepts of graphical design over time, including sequencing, static, and animated elements. Emphasis in exploring typography and design principles.

Description:  The study of letterforms and their appropriate and effective use in visual communications from a historic as well as from a contemporary perspective.

Description:  This is an intermediate level graphic design course emphasizing the use of the typographic grid, digital typesetting and production. The primary focus will be the use of typographic grids and information structures in multiple page projects.

Description:  Two-dimensional fiber techniques including 4-harness loom weaving (loom and weaver-controlled weaves) and tapestry weaving (cartoon as well as spontaneous methods). Emphasis on individual interpretation of traditional woven techniques.

ART 377 -- Intermediate Fibers II  (3 units)
Description:  Three-dimensional fiber techniques including tubular weaves, wedging, non-loom weaves, coiling, twining, crochet and knotting. Emphasis on the self-supportive fiber form.

ART 448A -- Discovering Place  (3 units)
Temporary course:  offered during Summer 2008 only.
Description:  This is an online interdisciplinary course that approaches "place" through a process of daily discovery. Students use their own bodies in the "lab," public environments, urban or otherwise, wherever they are located during the 3 weeks of the course's duration. To probe and map a relationship to the "place" through daily walking/wandering exercises aimed at getting beyond the monumental or oblivious navigation of location. A computer and a reliable internet connection throughout the course, as well as access to a digital or video camera once during the course is required. ART 548A -- Discovering Place  (3 units)
Temporary course:  offered during Summer 2008 only.
Description:  This is an online interdisciplinary course that approaches "place" through a process of daily discovery. Students use their own bodies in the "lab," public environments, urban or otherwise, wherever they are located during the 3 weeks of the course's duration. To probe and map a relationship to the "place" through daily walking/wandering exercises aimed at getting beyond the monumental or oblivious navigation of location. A computer and a reliable internet connection throughout the course, as well as access to a digital or video camera once during the course is required. Questions regarding specific equipment and technological needs in addition to those listed above should be directed to the instructor. Graduate-level requirements include creation of a ten minute PowerPoint presentation linking their work, discoveries or research to a relevant artist or collective. ART 589 -- Advanced 3D Figuration  (3 units)
Description:  Advanced techniques and concepts in clay modeling, mold making, casting in forton, plastics, paper and other 3D processes that are based on the figure as a source. Work primarily from the model, perfecting modeling techniques, utilizing figure proportions, muscle and skeletal structures, gesture, texture, scale, and composition in creating sculptural ideas. The course will explore, in depth, visual responses to shifts in cultural attitudes and artistic styles in site specific, installation and object based work that is derived from the figure. Graduate-level requirements include work which exemplifies graduate-level, knowledge, background, and skills. Life-size figures for the final project also required.

ART 596A -- Graduate Career Development for Visual Artists  (3 units)
Description:  Defining what it means to be a professional working artist is the mission of this class. Helping to demystify the process, groom and mentor all our students to successfully apply for grants, residencies, exhibitions, teaching opportunities, earn a living from their profession and feel empowered as professionals is the goal. We offer this class so you will have the opportunity to leave the School of Art of the University of Arizona as a visual artist with a realistic plan of action. For example, this course covers presentation and marketing tools, contracts, gallery and agent relations, overview of potential markets, exhibition opportunities, art law, role of museums in an artists career, searching for and signing a lease on a live/work space, grant and fellowships opportunities, tax law and record keeping and even how to place a value on your work

ART 596B -- Digital Illustration / Painting  (3 units)
Description:  This is an advanced level course in digital painting / illustration which will incorporate hands on painting, drawing including 3-dimensional forms in relation to digital imaging and then working back into these images with traditional media. Graduate-level requirements include two extra projects and a written paper.

Description:  This is a graduate seminar open to all students in the School of Art. Class meeting time will be spent in studio critiques, discussions of contemporary art practice and the three required readings, one-on-one meetings about research and rough drafts and research presentations. This seminar is designed to provide guidance for students in conducting individualized research to gain a better understanding of the social and cultural meanings of their art, illustration and/or design practice.

Description:  Introduction to the essential aspects of gallery management: curating special events, installation, marketing, and grant writing. Introduction to various careers in the arts as well as professionalism and key business skills needed in the art world. Students have hands-on practical experience working in the Joseph Gross Gallery. Graduate-level requirements include a major research project related to this course.

ART 597W -- Design Workshop  (3 units)
Description:  This course examines issues and processes in design, culture, and technology. Students will produce 3 studio projects that require research, experimentation and examination of critical issues in design. Graduates will develop one self-defined project that references their personal interest and possible thesis application. The student will also write a three to five page paper describing the effects of the project on further work.
