Winter 07/Spring 08 Course Descriptions

All courses below are approved to be taught in Winter 2007 and Spring 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered in either term.  The courses that are offered in Spring link to the Schedule of Classes.  Classes with alternative External Link delivery modes (Web based, cable TV, correspondence, etc) are noted in the Schedule at the section level.  The complete list below is a good indicator of what may be offered over the next few years (contact department about offerings).  For explanations of course elements see the Key to Course Descriptions.

TTEV 322 -- Teaching Language Arts and Communication in Elementary  (3 units)
Description:  The teaching of language and communicative arts in the elementary school, with special emphasis on current approaches and organization of methods and materials. Methods courses in block format only: TTE 322, TTE 323, TTE 324, TTE 326, TTE 327.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

TTEV 323 -- Teaching Reading and Decoding in Elementary School  (3 units)
Description:  The teaching of reading and decoding in the elementary school, with special emphasis on current approaches and organization of methods and materials. Methods courses in block format only: TTE 322, TTE 323, TTE 324, TTE 326, TTE 327.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

TTEV 324 -- Teaching Science and Health in Elementary School  (3 units)
Description:  Basic course in methods of elementary school science and health instruction, with special emphasis on the skills and structure of science in relation to the processes of inquiry. Methods courses in block format only: TTEV 322, TTEV 323, TTEV 324, TTEV 326, TTEV 327.

TTEV 326 -- Teaching Elementary School Mathematics in a Technological Age  (3 units)
Description:  Concepts, methods, and use of materials, calculators and computers in the teaching of elementary school mathematics. Methods courses in block format only: TTE 322, TTE 323, TTE 324, TTE 326, TTE 327.

TTEV 327 -- Teaching Elementary School Social Studies in a Multicultural Society  (3 units)
Description:  Methods and materials for teaching elementary school social studies with a multicultural emphasis. Methods courses in block format only: TTE 322, TTE 323, TTE 324, TTE 326, TTE 327.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

TTEV 411 -- Teaching of Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Theory and practice of teaching literature, with intensive study of genres and works commonly taught in secondary schools.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  ENGL411
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: TTEV 411 or ENGL 411
Prerequisite(s):  9 units of literature or consent of instructor. Priority given to English Education majors and minors.
Identical to:  ENGV 411; ENGV is home department.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

TTEV 417A -- Topics in the Teaching of English  (1-3 units)
Description:  Students will develop a philosophy of teaching English and transform theory and core course content into pedagogy by preparing teaching portfolios, developing teaching units and lesson plans that include writing assignments, and applying principles of curriculum design.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  ENGL417A
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: TTEV 417A or ENGL 417A
Prerequisite(s):  ENGL 101, ENGL 102.
Typical structure:  2 hours lecture, 1 hour discussion.
Identical to:  ENGV 417A; ENGV is home department.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

TTEV 493A -- Student Teaching in Elementary Education  (3-12 units)
Description:  Successful completion of professional education courses, content area courses, and the basic skills exam is required prior to student teaching. Music education students must consult with a music education advisor to waive this requirement. Application must be made one semester prior to enrollment in student teaching. Pass/fail grades are the only grades available for TTE 493A and TTE 493B. Enrollment in these courses will not reduce the amount for which a student can otherwise enroll under the pass-fail option.
Grading:  This course is offered for pass/fail only.

Prerequisite(s):  TTE 300, TTE 322, TTE 324, TTE 326, TTE 327, ED P 301; Concurrent registration, TTE 496C, SERP 301A. Admission to the College of Education.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.

TTEV 493B -- Student Teaching in Secondary School  (1-12 units)
Description:  Successful completion of professional education courses, content area courses, and the basic skills exam is required prior to student teaching. TTEV 496C -- Issues in Teaching  (1 unit)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.

Prerequisite(s):  or Concurrent registration, TTE 493A or TTE 493B. Credit will be given for TTEV 496C or TTE 496C but not for both.

TTEV 599 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599, 699, or 799.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
