SP H 207 -- Survey of Human Communication and Its Disorders  (3 units)
Description:  The role of hearing, language and speech processes in human communication and its disorders is covered through readings, lectures, and observations in laboratories and clinics.

SP H 261 -- Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism  (4 units)
Description:  This course is part I of a two-semester sequence that covers the anatomy and physiology of the speech mechanism for human communication. However, the courses are designed to stand alone, such that students could elect to take only one or the other of the courses without difficulty. This course will provide basic anatomy and physiologic information concerning the respiratory, laryngeal, and supraglottal airway subsystems as they pertain to speech production for human communication.

SP H 262 -- Neurobiology of Communication  (3 units)
Description:  This course focuses on the role of the central nervous system in human communication. The study of brain anatomy and physiology is approached from the perspective of how neurological systems support speech, language, and hearing and how breakdowns in these systems disrupt aspects of communication.

SP H 270 -- Scientific Thinking in Speech and Hearing Sciences  (3 units)
Description:  The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to scientific reasoning and critical thinking skills in the speech and hearing sciences. The main goals are to teach basic skills for critically evaluating research and implementing an experiment.

SP H 282 -- Biology of Sensation  (3 units)
Description:  Touch, hearing, vision, olfaction and taste are examined to illustrate scientific methods in biology, development of science in a social context and sensory phenomena in health and disease.

Description:  An ecological framework organizes study of individual family and societal response to deafness/hearing impairment occurring across the lifespan (infants-elders).

SP H 340 -- Language Science  (3 units)
Description:  Core features of language are identified and integrated into a model of language that is applicable to first and second language acquisition and language disorders. Topics may include: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

SP H 380 -- Hearing Science  (4 units)
Description:  This course introduces the auditory system and is organized around lectures and laboratory-demonstration sessions that address (a) physical properties of sound; (b) anatomy and physiology of the ear and related structures; and (c) basic information about auditory perception.

Description:  The cognitive and neural systems underlying the perception of speech, music and other complex sounds are examined in a multidisciplinary framework. Topics include representation of complex sounds in the auditory system and effects of language and music experience.

SP H 454 -- Audiologic Rehabilitation-Lifespan  (3 units)
Description:  Issues concerning amelioration of the effects of hearing loss on infants, children, adults and the elderly will be presented. Special topics include speech and language development, educational implications, and social and emotional consequences.

SP H 458 -- Clinical Studies: Speech-Language Pathology  (1-3 units)
Description:  Under supervision, students carry out prescribed intervention programs and conduct evaluation of children and adults. Students participate in weekly staffings and clinical problem-solving.

SP H 520 -- Cognitive Neuroscience of Hearing  (3 units)
Description:  The cognitive and neural systems underlying the perception of speech, music and other complex sounds are examined in a multidisciplinary framework. Topics include representation of complex sounds in the auditory system and effects of language and music experience. Graduate-level requirements include an in class presentation on a particular topic within the cognitive neuroscience of hearing and the creation of a summary document on their topic for a webpage providing information on Auditory Cognitive Science.

Description:  Under supervision, students carry out prescribed intervention programs and conduct evaluation of children and adults. SP H 562B -- Psychophysical Acoustics  (3 units)
Description:  The overall intent of this course is to give the student an insight into the manner in which the human organism interacts on a subjective or psychological level with auditory stimuli on the physical level. The course encompasses descriptions about psychoacoustical methods, signal detection theory, intensity processing, frequency processing, pitch perception, binaural hearing and temporal acuity.

SP H 564 -- Cultural Diversity: Speech Pathology and Audiology Relevance  (3 units)

Description:  This course will cover the basic principles of acoustics and speech acoustics. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) will also be introduced throughout the course. The final portion will address phonetic transcription.

Description:  Systematic examination of current experimentation and research in speech as motor behavior, with emphasis on physiological investigations of normal respiration, phonation, resonance, and articulation; critical evaluation of research design.
