Description:  Introduction to the integration of special students into the regular secondary classrooms.

SERP 301C -- Inclusive Early Education for Children with Diverse Abilities  (2 units)
Description:  Provides early childhood educators a foundation of best educational practices in including children with diverse abilities from birth to 8 years of age. This course presents specific information, techniques, and methods for developing age-appropriate and meaningful programming within typical early childhood settings through collaborative service delivery for students who have varying exceptionalities such as autism, multiple disabilities, cognitive disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders. Students will apply strategies given case scenarios as well as on-site practical experiences.

SERP 370A -- American Sign Language I  (4 units)
Description:  Designed for students with no previous knowledge of ASL and/or deaf culture. To develop basic skills in ASL vocabulary, grammar and use. First course in a four semester sequence.

SERP 370B -- American Sign Language II  (4 units)
Description:  Designed to help students continue developing basic skills in ASL vocabulary, grammar and use. Second course in a four semester sequence.

SERP 401A -- Assessment & Instruction for Students with Early Reading & Spelling Difficulties  (3 units)
Description:  Procedures, methods, strategies for informal diagnosis and instruction of students with learning problems in the areas of reading and spelling. Strategies appropriate for use in the elementary or the special classroom.

SERP 403 -- Special Services in Schools  (3 units)
Description:  Information to aid teachers in dealing with responsibilities and concerns in school settings with regard to P.L. 94-142. Education for All Handicapped Children Act Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, and other legal issues.

SERP 404 -- Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Exceptional Learners  (3 units)
Description:  Provides a theoretical base and practical approach to the study of special needs of students with language and cultural differences; basic premises of bilingual special education and the interface of the two fields.

SERP 407A -- Methods for Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Assessment and instruction with an emphasis on formal assessment, informal assessment, diagnostic teaching, and implementation of individualized instructional programs.

SERP 407B -- Methods for Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Continuation of SERP 407A. Preparation for preservice educators to provide assessment and instruction for students with high incidence (learning and behavioral) disabilities.

SERP 409 -- Introduction Learning and Behavioral Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Issues in the education of students with mild-moderate mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional or behavioral disorders, attention deficit disorders, and physical disabilities. Topics include history, definitions, current issues, characteristics, theories, and educational programming.

SERP 414 -- Introduction to Disability Studies and Services  (3 units)
Description:  Overview of disability in the humanities; historical and current perspectives of rehabilitation, education, and public policy.

SERP 415 -- Physical and Multiple Disabilities  (3 units)
Description:  Physical and multiple impairments, etiology, intervention practices, adaptations, transferring and handling skills, integrated and collaborative related service delivery, and integration into typical environments.

SERP 416 -- Disability Perspectives and Narratives  (3 units)
Description:  Exploration of disability culture and identity throughout the lifespan with respect to family, education, employment, public policy and ethical issues; including the pervasive representational uses of disability and the discrimination faced by people with disabilities.

SERP 420 -- Low Vision and Visual Functioning  (3 units)
Description:  Anatomy and physiology of the eye; implications of visual disorders including visual field losses; introduction to optics; use of optical and non-optical aids in classroom settings.

SERP 421 -- Introduction to Visual Impairments and Deaf-Blindness  (3 units)
Description:  An overview of educational services for the student with visual impairments and multiple sensory impairments. An emphasis is placed on the psychosocial effects of visual impairments on the individual and means of compensating for those effects.

SERP 422 -- Orientation and Mobility for Teachers of Individuals with Visual Impairments  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of teaching orientation and mobility skills to visually impaired and blind students. Emphasis on the school-aged child, with particular attention to concept development, orientation skills, pre-cane skills, personal safety, and independent ambulation, including an introduction to long-cane techniques.

SERP 475 -- Observation and Participation in Special Education Programs  (1-3 units)

Description:  Analysis of addictive behaviors (e.g., drug addictions, eating disorders, compulsive gambling) from a psychosocial and biological perspective and the implications of this analysis for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of addictions.

SERP 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

SERP 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. Description:  Provides beginning graduate students with a knowledge of issues surrounding the fields of special education and rehabilitation. Students will examine and develop their personal philosophies regarding assessment of, services to and intervention with individuals with exceptionalities.
