Radiation Oncology (RONC)  Department Info

RONC 551 -- Molecular Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis  (3 units)
Description:  Physical and chemical carcinogenesis. Special emphasis will be upon molecular aspects of the interaction of the carcinogenic agents with mammalian cells and the subsequent mutagenic and metabolic consequences of such interactions. The topics of oncogene activation and tumor suppressor gene inactivation induced by carcinogens during multi-stage carcinogenesis will be emphasized. The molecular biology techniques used in the study of carcinogenesis will also be covered.

RONC 555 -- Cancer Therapeutics  (3 units)
Description:  Fundamental biological aspects of physical, chemical and biological therapies for cancer.

RONC 596C -- Medical Physics Seminar  (1 unit)
Description:  During the Medical Physics Seminar several areas of medical physics will be explored, including faculty research, professional issues and guest speakers. Students who attend the course will be up to date on current research, credentialing and professional issues.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.

RONC 601A -- Radiation Dosimetry  (3 units)
Description:  Radiation dosimetry is the science of how ionizing radiation interacts with matter and specifically the energy absorbed. This course will deal with quantitative methods used to determine energy deposition. Topics will include radiation interactions, radiation measurements and dosimetry fundamentals.

RONC 601B -- Therapeutic Radiological Physics  (3 units)
Description:  Therapeutic radiological physics is the study of using radiation to treat different medical pathologies. This course will cover areas of basic radiation physics, external beam therapy, brachytherapy and linear accelerators.

RONC 615A -- Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention  (3 units)
Description:  An overview of the current issues and methods in cancer epidemiological studies. Issues and methods used in cancer surveillance, international studies, observational studies, and intervention trials will be covered.

Prerequisite(s):  EPID 573A; Prerequisite or Concurrent registration, EPID 576A.

RONC 699 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599, 699, or 799.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.

RONC 800A -- Research  (1-16 units)
Description:  This elective consists of involvement in a research project of special interest to the student.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
Prerequisite(s):  Consent of instructor.
May be repeated:  for a total of 16 units of credit.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

RONC 815A -- Introduction to Radiation Oncology  (1-16 units)
Description:  contact department.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.

RONC 816D -- Neuro-Oncology  (1-16 units)
Description:  Subspecialty in neuro-oncology.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
Prerequisite(s):  open to medical students only.

RONC 899 -- Independent Study  (1-16 units)
Description:  The goal of this elective is to allow the student to work with a particular faculty member in pursuit of a particular field of study in surgery.
