PHPR 195A -- Perspectives on Health Care: Current Issues and Trends  (1 unit)
Description:  The course will address themes, trends, and issues that contribute to the quality, access, delivery and outcome of pharmaceutical and health care. Attention will be given to addressing the roles of pharmaceutical economics, science, and technology, public health and health professional education and practice in the definition of pharmaceutical and health care; issues such as the influence of demographics, gender, age, diversity, behavior, education, politics and socioeconomic conditions on the health of Americans will be explored.  This is a First-Year Colloquium Course.

Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

PHPR 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

PHPR 596D -- Dean's Seminar: Issues in Pharmacy and Health Care  (2 units)
Description:  The intent of this course is to enable the student and instructor to discuss controversial issues as related to the practice of pharmacy and health care. This course will include an examination on the issues surrounding access and appropriate drug therapy for patients, with a focus on prescription benefits and the use of outcomes research to insure value in clinical, economic, and humanistic terms. Healthcare providers and researchers can play an important role not only in educating the public about the value of pharmaceutical innovation, but also in encouraging appropriate, efficient, and cost-effective use of medications. Additional discussions will focus on IOM reports regarding the quality and safety of health care and the role of the pharmacist in the treatment and prevention of disease.

PHPR 673 -- Epidemiology of Aging  (3-4 units)
Description:  This is a course in the principles and methods of epidemiology as applied to the study of aging. It assumes basic knowledge of pathophysiology, and epidemiological and biostatistical methods. Major research issues in the Epidemiology of Aging as well as the methods to study them will be presented and discussed. This course will examine concepts including: Trends in aging and the health of aging populations; Health transition, and explanations and consequences of mortality decline; Determinants of health and survival; Distinctions between healthy aging, disease and disability; Health promotion and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, as applied to older persons; The epidemiology of selected diseases, syndromes and conditions common to old age; The aged health care continuum and how different types of care/ health care systems are used in prevention, intervention and treatment, and supportive care; Special concepts and key methodological considerations for conducting epidemiologic studies of older persons (e.g., cohort effects, age-specific rates, age standardization, use of proxies, appropriate measures, adjusting for comorbidities, and longitudinal analyses), and Practical and ethical issues in the aged as research subjects

PHPR 801 -- Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Community and Institutional Practice  (4 units)
Description:  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to pharmacy practice by providing “hands on” experience in various practice settings.

Prerequisite(s):  completion at least one semester of PharmD professional coursework. Completion of health screening requirements for placement in rotation sites, CPR training, HIPAA and Bloodborne Pathogen Safety Certification, and UA background check.

PHPR 802 -- Pharmaceutics  (3 units)
Description:  Discussion of the physical and chemical factors that relate to the development of pharmaceutical products and drug delivery systems. Emphasis is placed on newly emerging technologies and an industrial perspective.

Description:  Elective rotation that provides an opportunity for study of the practice of pharmacy in a country other than the United States. By participating in an international rotation, the student will gain a better understanding of the impact of culture on health beliefs, the delivery of health care services, and the provision of pharmaceutical care.

Description:  An overview of the U. S. health care system and the consumers, providers, payers, and regulators that comprise it. PHPR 863 -- Quality Assurance and Medication Error Reduction  (3 units)
Description:  This course encourages the student to strive for professional excellence by exploring the topic of medication errors. In so doing, the course will acquaint the student with the nature of quality assurance in health care and examine approaches that students can use to assure quality drug therapy.

PHPR 888 -- Practical Spanish for Pharmacy Practice  (2 units)
Description:  This elective class is designed to provide students with basic vocabulary needed to do simple consultations with Spanish-speaking individuals in an outpatient pharmacy setting. Students will perform numerous oral/aural exercises to develop listening comprehension and verbal skills; participate in a variety of role-playing activities to improve fluency and gain confidence using the Spanish language and will learn general and specific terminology within the context of communication with patients. Grammar instruction will stress contrasting sentence structure and language patterns between English and Spanish and will be directed to supporting verbal communication.
Grading:  This course is offered for pass/fail only.

PHPR 889 -- Clinical Pharmacotherapy of Mental Disorders  (2 units)

PHPR 895B -- Preparation for Rotations  (1 unit)
Description:  The objective of this course is to prepare students for the fourth year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Course sessions will include the following: Preceptor Visits, Presentations on Rotations, CPR Training, Patient Monitoring, Residencies, Tips On Fourth Year Planning, Portfolio Development, Résumés and Curricula Vitae, and Off-Campus Access to the College Computer Server.

PHPR 896D -- Dean's Seminar: Issues in Pharmacy and Health Care  (2 units)
Description:  The intent of this course is to enable the student and instructor to discuss controversial issues as related to the practice of pharmacy and health care. This course will include an examination on the issues surrounding access and appropriate drug therapy for patients, with a focus on prescription benefits and the use of outcomes research to insure value in clinical, economic, and humanistic terms. Healthcare providers and researchers can play an important role not only in educating the public about the value of pharmaceutical innovation, but also in encouraging appropriate, efficient, and cost-effective use of medications. Additional discussions will focus on IOM reports regarding the quality and safety of health care and the role of the pharmacist in the treatment and prevention of disease.

PHPR 897A -- Concepts of Pharmacy Business: Entrepreneurship  (2 units)
Description:  The course will teach the basics of pharmacy business and pharmacy ownership. Specific concepts will include innovation, marketing, physical structure, and financials. Students will be required to develop and submit a business plan for new pharmacy or pharmacy service.
