PATH 481A -- Assessing Early Stage Technologies for Commercial Potential  (2 units)
Description:  This is pre-business plan course designed to equip students to effectively evaluate and assess early stage technologies to identify potential applications and market opportunities, enabling decisions to advance research and design, and solicit early stage investment.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Special course fee required:  Students will be assessed a $20 per unit fee when registering for this course for Winter or any Summer Session.
Identical to:  ENTR 481A; ENTR is home department.
May be convened with:  PATH 581A.

PATH 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

PATH 501 -- General and Systemic Pathology  (10 units)
Description:  Lectures, conferences, demonstrations and laboratory investigations relating to disease. Use of current autopsy, biopsy and clinical pathology material.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  admission to the M.D./Ph.D. program and consent of instructor.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

PATH 512A -- Biological Electron Microscopy  (5 units)
Description:  Provides theoretical background and practical experience in transmission and scanning electron microscopy that are necessary for the efficient and effective application of ultra-structural and cytochemical techniques as research tools.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  one college-level course in each of physics, chemistry, and biology.
Typical structure:  9 hours laboratory, 2 hours lecture.

PATH 515 -- Basic Human Pathology  (4 units)
Description:  Biochemical, structural, and functional changes in cells, tissues, and organs, which cause and are caused by diseases. For graduate students training for a career in biomedical research.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  open to all graduate students.
Typical structure:  3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory.

PATH 581A -- Assessing Early Stage Technologies for Commercial Potential  (2 units)
Description:  This is pre-business plan course designed to equip students to effectively evaluate and assess early stage technologies to identify potential applications and market opportunities, enabling decisions to advance research and design, and solicit early stage investment. Graduate-level requirements include graduate students serving as team leaders.

PATH 801 -- General and Systemic Pathology  (10 units)

PATH 810A -- Anatomic Pathology  (1-16 units)
Description:  An intern-type program with students participating in surgical pathology, autopsies and cytopathology. Instruction is strongly clinically oriented.

Prerequisite(s):  PATH 801; 12 weeks of clinical clerkships.

PATH 810B -- Clinical Pathology  (1-16 units)
Description:  An interpretive approach to the evaluation of laboratory data in the diagnosis and management of clinical disorders. Topics include bacteriology, blood component therapy, body fluid analysis, clinical chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunohematology, mycology, toxicology, urinalysis, and virology.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
Prerequisite(s):  PATH 801 and 12 weeks of clinical clerkships.

PATH 810C -- Special Topics  (1-16 units)
Description:  Opportunities for intensive studies during a six-week period in one of the following fields: cytopathology, cytogenetics, immunohematology, immunopathology, microbiology-virology, neuropathology, pulmonary pathology, hematopathology, clinical chemistry and oncology. May be taken more than once for credit.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
Prerequisite(s):  PATH 801; prior arrangement and approval by the department.
May be repeated:  for a total of 36 units of credit.

PATH 810D -- Anatomic/Clinical Pathology  (1-16 units)
Description:  contact department.

Description:  Clerkship in laboratory medicine and pathology.

PATH 815A -- The Clinical Practice of Telemedicine  (1-16 units)
Description:  The goal of this elective is to introduce the student to the practice of telemedicine. Telemedicine allows for patient evaluation at a distance. By allowing the patient to remain in her/his own community, telemedicine is thought to increase access to care. Although the main focus of this elective is clinical, students interest in technology assessment, economic evaluation and patient education are encouraged. Placements at rural sites are available.

PATH 815B -- Introduction to Dermatopathology  (1-16 units)
Description:  Goals: Upon successful completion of this elective, students will be able to: 1 - explain how skin biopsies are obtained and processed; demonstrate a basic understanding of the microscopic structure of the skin and subcutis; demonstrate a familiarity with the variety of inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the skin and diagnose common skin tumors; explain the importance of clinicopathologic correlation in dermatopathology; explain the limitations of histopathologic evaluation of skin disease; publish a case report in dermatopathology (optional)

Prerequisite(s):  1 month of clinical dermatology, 1 month of pathology preferred, prior consent of instructor.
Typical structure:  3 hours laboratory, 15 hours lecture.

PATH 816D -- Pediatric Anatomic and Clinical Pathology  (1-16 units)
Description:  The elective in pediatric anatomic and clinical pathology offers the senior medical student in-depth exposure to pediatric surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy pathology. Various aspects of the clinical laboratory may be experienced, including hematopathology, microbiology, transfusion medicine, and clinical chemistry. Students will directly participate in gross and microscopic surgical pathology, intraoperative consultations, gross and microscopic autopsy examination, and microscopic examination and flow cytometry of bone marrow. At the end of the elective the student will understand the activities involved in pediatric pathology and will have gained a basic knowledge of diagnostic pediatric anatomic pathology.

Prerequisite(s):  Completion of all 3rd year clerkships.

PATH 891A -- Pathology  (1-16 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of instruction and practice in actual service in a department, program, or discipline. Teaching formats may include seminars, in-depth studies, laboratory work and patient study.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
May be repeated:  for a total of 54 units of credit.

PATH 891C -- Barrow Neurological Institute Neuropathology  (1-16 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of instruction and practice in actual service in a department, program, or discipline. Teaching formats may include seminars, in-depth studies, laboratory work and patient study.

Description:  The goal of this elective is to allow the student to work with a particular faculty member in pursuit of a particular field of study in pathology.
