All courses below are approved to be taught in Winter 2007 and Spring 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered in either term.  The courses that are offered in Spring link to the Schedule of Classes.  Classes with alternative External Link delivery modes (Web based, cable TV, correspondence, etc) are noted in the Schedule at the section level.  The complete list below is a good indicator of what may be offered over the next few years (contact department about offerings).  For explanations of course elements see the Key to Course Descriptions.

Naval Science (N S )  Department Info

N S 100 -- Naval Laboratory  (1 unit)
Description:  Various topics such as drill and ceremonies, physical fitness, cruise preparation, sail training, safety awareness, personal finances, and applied exercises in naval ship systems, navigation, naval operations, naval administration, and military justice.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
May be repeated:  for credit 9 times (maximum 10 enrollments).
Usually offered:  Fall.

N S 101 -- Introduction to Naval Science  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the naval profession and to concepts of seapower, with emphasis on mission, organization, and warfare components of the Navy and Marine Corps; naval courtesy and customs, military justice, shipboard damage control and safety.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Usually offered:  Fall.

N S 102 -- Naval Ship Systems I: Engineering  (3 units)
Description:  Ship characteristics and types including ship design, hydrodynamic forces, stability, compartmentation, propulsion, electrical and auxiliary systems, interior communications, ship control, and damage control; basic concepts of the theory and design of steam, gas turbine, and nuclear propulsion.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

N S 103 -- Naval Laboratory  (2 units)
Description:  Various topics such as drill and ceremonies, physical conditioning, cruise preparation, safety awareness, naval warfare doctrine and operations, administration and military justice. USMC history, traditions, missions, land navigation, troop leading skills and small unit tactics.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
May be repeated:  for credit 9 times (maximum 10 enrollments).

N S 105 -- Marine Lab for Platoon Leaders  (1 unit)
Description:  USMC history, traditions, missions, land navigation, troop leading skills and small unit tactics.

N S 201 -- Naval Ship Systems: Weapons  (3 units)
Description:  Theory and employment of weapons systems, the processes of detection, evaluation, threat analysis, selection, delivery, and guidance. Physical aspects of radar and under-water sound.

Prerequisite(s):  N S 102.

N S 202 -- Seapower and Maritime Affairs  (3 units)
Description:  U.S. Naval history from the American Revolution to the present. Discussion of the theories of Mahan, political issues of merchant marine commerce, and a comparison of U.S. and Soviet naval strategies.

N S 301 -- Navigation and Naval Operations I  (3 units)
Description:  Theory, principles, and procedures of navigation. Students learn piloting navigation including the use of charts, visual and electronic aids, the theory and operation of magnetic and gyro compasses, and celestial navigation.

Usually offered:  Fall.

N S 302 -- Navigation and Naval Operations II  (3 units)
Description:  International and inland rules of the road, relative-motion vector-analysis, formation tactics, and ship employment. Introduction to naval operations and ship handling.

Prerequisite(s):  N S 301.

N S 310 -- Evolution of Warfare  (3 units)
Description:  The development of warfare to present, focusing on theorists, strategists, tacticians, and technological developments. Student acquires sense of strategy and impact of precedent on military actions.

N S 400 -- Advanced Naval Laboratory  (1 unit)
Description:  Command and leadership training associated with the student battalion. Includes settings which manifest conditions of stress, time management, personal accountability, decision making, and command leadership.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  open to NROTC students only.
May be repeated:  for credit 5 times (maximum 6 enrollments).

N S 401 -- Leadership and Management I  (3 units)
Description:  Organizational behavior and management in the context of the naval organization. A survey of management functions of planning, organizing, and controlling; and introduction to individual and group behavior in organizations; motivation and leadership.

N S 402 -- Leadership and Ethics  (3 units)
Description:  The capstone course of the NROTC academic syllabus, intended to establish the ethical foundation, basic leadership tools, and knowledge of the military justice system needed to be an effective junior officer and an outstanding leader. Additionally, the course provides an overview of naval service administrative matters and of the duties, responsibilities, and expectations of a naval service junior officer.

Prerequisite(s):  N S 401.

N S 403 -- Advanced Naval Laboratory for Marines  (2 units)
Description:  Commanding and leadership training associated with the student battalion. Includes settings which manifest conditions of stress, time management, personal accountability, decision making, and command leadership.

Prerequisite(s):  open to NROTC students only.

N S 410 -- Amphibious Warfare  (3 units)
Description:  Historical survey of the development of amphibious doctrine and amphibious operations, with emphasis on the evolution of amphibious warfare in the 20th century; present day potential and limitations on amphibious operations, including the rapid deployment force concept.

N S 499 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
