TEDV 300 -- Introduction to Education  (3 units)
Description:  An in-depth survey focusing on the nature and function of schools in society, school reform proposals, moral dimensions of schooling, equity of educational opportunity, alternatives to schooling and the nature of the teaching profession.

TEDV 302 -- Introduction to Special Education  (3 units)
Description:  The identification and characteristics of emotionally handicapped, learning disabled, mentally handicapped and gifted children.

TEDV 311 -- Literacy in Elementary School  (3 units)
Description:  In this course, participants will be invited to read, enjoy, ponder, discuss and engage in a wide range of excellent books for children. Class members will explore various authors and illustrators of children’s books and become familiar with resources available concerning children’s literature; read professional literature framing classroom discussions on how to use literature effectively and authentically in the classroom. Through these opportunities and experiences, participants will establish a foundation for sharing and using literature in the classroom.

Typical structure:  1 hour colloquium, 1 hour lecture, 1 hour workshop.

TEDV 322 -- Creative Arts in Context  (3 units)
Description:  The integration of the creative arts with elementary school content areas.

TEDV 324 -- Teaching Exceptional Children  (3 units)
Description:  Standards-based methodologies for the instruction of exceptional children in the elementary and middle school classroom
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  TEDV 302.
Typical structure:  1 hour lecture, 1 hour discussion.

TEDV 326 -- Learning and Development  (3 units)
Description:  Theories of learning as they relate to the growth and development of children.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  TEDV 394A.
Typical structure:  2 hours lecture, 1 hour discussion.

TEDV 330 -- Reading Instruction and Assessment  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of standards based instruction in elementary and middle school are emphasized to enable students to explore a variety of philosophies, methods of instruction and assessment, and strategies integrating all areas of literacy.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Typical structure:  1 hour lecture, 1 hour workshop, 1 hour discussion.

TEDV 331 -- Language Arts Instruction and Assessment  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of standards-based instruction in elementary and middle school, emphasizing methodologies for teaching language and communicative arts.

TEDV 332 -- Mathematics Instruction and Assessment  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of standards-based instruction in elementary and middle school, emphasizing the ways to acquire and use the understanding, conceptual knowledge and skills of mathematics.

Prerequisite(s):  MATH 110, MATH 302A, MATH 302B. Concurrent registration, TEDV494A. Field Placement Required.

TEDV 333 -- Science Instruction and Assessment  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of standards-based instruction in elementary and middle school, emphasizing the ways to acquire and use the understanding of science taught through inquiry, methodology.

Prerequisite(s):  TEDV 420, Admission into UA South BAS or Commerce Program. Concurrent registration, TEDV494A, Field Placement required.

TEDV 334 -- Social Studies Instruction and Assessment  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of standards-based instruction in elementary and middle school, emphasizing ways to acquire and use the understanding, conceptual knowledge, and skills of living in a rural or urban communities.

Prerequisite(s):  TEDV 420. Concurrent registration, TEDV 494A; Field Placement required.

TEDV 394A -- Field Studies I  (1 unit)
Description:  Observation and analysis of the growth and development of children as it relates to learning

TEDV 394B -- Field Studies II  (1 unit)
Description:  The identification and analysis of classroom processes and instruction

Prerequisite(s):  Concurrent registration, TEDV 420. Field Placement required.

TEDV 399 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise them in Elementary Education.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

TEDV 420 -- Classroom Management and Instruction  (3 units)
Description:  Analysis of theories and practice of instruction, management techniques and assessment.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Concurrent registration, TEDV 394B. Field Placement required.
Typical structure:  1 hour individual studies, 1 hour lecture, 1 hour discussion.

TEDV 493A -- Student Teaching In Elementary School  (1-12 units)
Description:  Classroom-based internship for pre-service elementary school teachers.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  TEDV 330, TEDV 331, TEDV 332, TEDV 333, TEDV 334, TEDV 420. Cumulatiave 2.5 G.P.A. on methods course work. Concurrent registration, TEDV 498. Field placement required.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

TEDV 494A -- Field Studies III  (1 unit)
Description:  The practical application of theories of instruction and assessment in classroom settings.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  TEDV 394A , TEDV 394B. Concurrent registragion, TEDV 330, TEDV 331, TEDV 332, TEDV 333, TEDV 334. Field Placement required.
May be repeated:  for credit 3 times (maximum 4 enrollments).
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

TEDV 498 -- Senior Capstone in Elementary Education  (2 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors on issues in professional and career development involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  Have a 2.5 G.P.A. on all course work in the program. Concurrent registration, TEDV493. Field Placement required.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

TEDV 499 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise them in Elementary Education.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.

TEDV 502 -- Research in Teaching and Schooling  (3 units)
Description:  A survey and analysis of recent research in teaching and schooling.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Usually offered:  Summer.

TEDV 516 -- Teaching Exceptional Children in the Secondary School Classroom  (3 units)
Description:  Advanced standards-based methods for the instruction and assessment of exceptional children in the middle and secondary school classroom.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Typical structure:  2 hours lecture, 1 hour discussion.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

TEDV 520 -- Classroom Management and Instruction  (3 units)
Description:  Analysis of theories and practice of instruction, management techniques and assessment. Graduate-level requirements include Graduate a detailed discipline plan based on readings in the Charles text and their initial internship experience in the classroom.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Course includes 1 or more field trips.
Prerequisite(s):  Concurrent registration, TEDV593A. Field Placement required

TEDV 527 -- Adolescent Development and Learning  (3 units)
Description:  This course provides an in-depth survey of the philosophies, practical and theoretical issues regarding adolescent development and learning.

TEDV 530 -- Methods and Models of Secondary School Teaching  (3 units)
Description:  Advanced methods of standards-based instruction for middle and secondary school teachers.

Prerequisite(s):  Concurrent registration, TEDV593A or TEDV593B. Field Placement is required.
Typical structure:  2 hours lecture, 1 hour discussion.

TEDV 535 -- Participant Research Methodologies  (3 units)
Description:  Theories and methods of participant research as a means of the professional development of teachers.

TEDV 593A -- Secondary School Internship I  (3 units)
Description:  The practical application of theories and methods of instruction in the middle and secondary classroom.

Prerequisite(s):  Concurrent registration, TEDV 535. Field placement required.

TEDV 593B -- Secondary School Internship II  (6 units)
Description:  The practical application of theories and methods of instruction in the middle and secondary classroom.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  TEDV 535 and TEDV 593A. Field placement required.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

TEDV 596A -- Topics in Teacher Education  (1-3 units)
Description:  Investigation of qualitative and quantitative research in teaching and schooling, focusing on the “best practices” for teachers in our public schools. The philosophical base of the course follows the belief that practitioner researchers are best able to recognize situations that require change and set forth momentum to realize improvement in education, care, and policy settings.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.
May be repeated:  for a total of 12 units of credit.

TEDV 599 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise them in Secondary Education.
