PHSC 513 -- Health Technology Assessment  (3 units)
Description:  Provides an overview of methods in health technology assessment, including cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness, and cost-utility analysis. Current controversies in technology assessment are discussed. Emphasis will be placed on critical assessment of the published literature.

PHSC 530 -- Proteins and Nucleic Acids as Drug Targets  (3 units)
Description:  [Taught alternate years beginning Spring 2005]. The course will be coordinated through the Medicinal Chemistry Division of Pharmacology & Toxicology and will be Team Taught. Each semester four to five topics will be chosen for which the core areas of (chemistry, biochemistry, and medicinal chemistry) have been brought to bear on a specific biological question. Faculty, from the core areas, will lecture on each topic and lead discussions. Students will present material and lead discussions.

PHSC 585 -- Advanced Clinical Pharmacokinetics  (3 units)
Description:  An overview of the U. S. health care system and the consumers, providers, payers, and regulators that comprise it. The role of pharmacy and pharmacists within the health care system will be explored, including an examination of social, behavioral, and economic factors associated with the prescribing, dispensing, and use of medications.

PHSC 589 -- Clinical Pharmacotherapy of Mental Disorders  (2 units)
Description:  A multidisciplinary approach to clinical psychopharmacology, therapeutics, and diagnosis of mental disorders for health professionals. Graduate students will be required to write a paper on a topic related to psychopharmacology or mental health. Topics must be approved by course coordinator.

PHSC 596L -- National Health Care Systems  (1 unit)
Description:  This seminar course will compare US healthcare delivery systems with the national health care systems of 12 other industrialized nations. Each of these 12 nations has a health care system that covers all or nearly all of its citizens. Each nation is a member of OECD which has collected comparative health care data on each country since 1960.

Description:  An introduction into principles of drug discovery, design, and development covering the process and tools such as computational chemistry, combinatorial chemistry and subjects such as molecular target identification, drug receptor interactions, DNA and proteins as molecular targets, drug metabolism, and drug delivery systems.
