LRC 312C -- Early Language Acquisition and Literacy Development  (3 units)
Description:  This course focuses on theories of language development and early literacy and how these theories inform practice in early childhood education. The acquisition of the sounds of language, the meaning of language, the relation between oral language development and concepts of print, and emergent literacy are examined along with issues stemming from language diversity. The relationship between language and literacy is critical to developing effective curriculum and instruction.

LRC 320 -- Teaching with New Technologies  (3 units)
Description:  Surveys current technological developments, including hardware and software, and their impact on teaching and learning processes in schools today.

LRC 330 -- Interpreting Native Cultures  (1 unit)
Description:  Students learn about the history and culture of Native American tribes and gain familiarity with museum education methods. Through the related Internship, they receive training in museum interpretation philosophy and methods, and conduct inquiry-based tours of ASM’s Paths of Life exhibition for K-12 fieldtrip groups

LRC 475A -- The Education of Latinas/Latinos  (3 units)
Description:  This course will provide an overview of the theories, policies, and practices related to the education of Latinos. We will focus specifically on the social, cultural, economic, and institutional factors, within and outside the school context, that contribute to Latino students' underachievement, failure, and negative educational outcomes. In addition, transformative practices that promote student achievement, learning, and critical consciousness will be discussed. Readings will cover various issues in education as well as introduce course participants to a broad collection of primarily Latino scholars interested in developing new methods and policies that will improve the educational experiences of Latino students.

LRC 480C -- Children’s Literature in the Classroom: Birth to Age 8  (3 units)
Description:  The purpose of this course is to give participants an opportunity to explore the many excellent books available for young children; the authors, illustrators, and poets who write for young children; and the resources available on children’s literature. These experiences will provide a foundation for using children’s literature in early childhood settings.

LRC 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

LRC 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. LRC 553 -- Language Acquisition and Development  (3 units)
Description:  Study of the acquisition and development of language including phonology, lexicon, syntax and pragmatics; drawing on both sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics the course examines the ways in which individuals become socialized into particular patterns of oral and written language use; issues of bilingualism and biliteracy will be considered; implications for pedagogy, practice and research will be explored.

LRC 554 -- Educational and Applied Linguistics  (3 units)

Description:  Preparation or teachers in creating interactive multimedia presentations for use in language arts. LRC 564 -- Literacy and the Arts  (3 units)
Description:  Arts integration in the K-16 language arts classroom. Music, Dance/movement, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts, Media Arts, and the Literacy Arts will be presented. Foci will include: semiotic transmediation, art as experience, the psychology of art and arts-related research, and others.

Description:  This course focuses on theories of reader response, both in relation to the reading process and to literary criticism, with a major emphasis on Louise Rosenblatt’s transactional theories of literature. Exploration of reading as a social act that involves multiple, diverse interpretations within a democratic context will be explored through a close examination of Rosenblatt’s theories and a broad survey of other theoretical perspectives on reader response. Implications of these theories for practice will also be considered.
