JUS 321 -- Women in Judaism  (3 units)
Description:  Images of Jewish women in Jewish and other texts. Texts include religious, historical and literary genres from biblical, medieval, and modern sources. The course will deal with Jewish women as mothers, leaders, stereotypes, and current feminist viewpoints.

Description:  Course traces the historical development of the many expressions of modern Jewish philosophy and theology since the seventeenth century.

JUS 332 -- Jewish Response to the Holocaust  (3 units)
Description:  This course examines the impact of the Holocaust on contemporary Jewish thought. The methodology of the course is interpretive and historical. In the course, students will explore theological and philosophical texts, Holocaust narrative and film, in order to understand the role of the Holocaust in Jewish history. However, the course will not focus on the historical events of the Holocaust. Instead, the course will be arranged thematically into three sections: The introductory section examines the anti-Semitism of the Holocaust in the context of the antagonistic relationship between Judaism and Christianity throughout history.

JUS 348 -- Israeli Fiction and Poetry  (3 units)
Description:  The course provides an introduction to major trends in Israeli fiction, poetry, and literary criticism. It also provides a historical background on ideological context and cultural identity formation by learning about Israeli literary accomplishments beginning in the 1880's and ending in the 1990's.

JUS 377 -- Modern Israel  (3 units)
Description:  Evolution of the State of Israel from the rise of Zionism in 19th Century Europe to the present. Survey of the origins of the State of Israel from the rise of Zionism in 19th Century Europe to the Declaration of the State of Israel in 1948. Evolution of the State of Israel from 1949 to the present. Emphasis on interactive generative processes and understanding of the interplay between past processes and present socio-political realities.

JUS 382 -- Archaeology and the Bible  (3 units)
Description:  Focuses on the relationship between archaeological investigations and the study of the Bible. In combination with a discussion of how archaeology can assist in reconstructing many aspects of the cultural and social milieu of the Bible, this course will survey major discoveries which illuminate the Bible.

JUS 387 -- The History of Anti-Semitism  (3 units)
Description:  This course examines various definitions of anti-Semitism and traces the history of anti-Semitism (or “anti-Judaism”) from the earliest arguments between Christianizing Jews and Judaizing Christians to the birth of Islam, through the period of Muslim expansion and the Crusades, to the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment, and the Holocaust. It looks at the differences among various types of Christian anti-Semitism, Muslim anti-Semitism, and Jewish anti-Semitism, and concludes with a look at contemporary forms of anti-Semitism.

JUS 447 -- Women in Ancient Israel  (3 units)
Description:  This course is an intensive investigation of the life of the ancient Israelite woman. It presents a multidisciplinary approach toward reconstructing the social, economic, religious and political life of women in Iron Age Israel. Through readings and class discussion, students will explore the ways in which women contributed to their society throughout the eras of the Judges and of the United and Divided Monarchies (1200-587 BCE). Because women traditionally have been undervalued and marginalized, until recently little attention was devoted to this vitally important and stimulating topic. In consequence, students will be challenged to utilize mulitple sources in their reconstruction of the lives of Israelite women. The sources used in this class will include (but not be limited to) archaelogical, historical and art historical data, the witness of the Hebrew Bible and other pertinent texts, and anthropological and ethnographic studies of the roles of women in preindustrial and Middle eastern societies.
