Description:  Designed to acquaint the non-journalist with newspapers, wire services, information agencies, news magazines, broadcast cable and online news; analysis of social and historical influences on the news media.

JOUR 203 -- Photojournalism  (3 units)
Description:  Reporting news through images and graphics; introduction to all aspects of photojournalism, including law, ethics, history and critical decision-making.

JOUR 205 -- Reporting the News  (3 units)
Description:  Gathering, evaluating, and writing news. Completion of this course with a grade of C or better also satisfies the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) requirement.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

JOUR 206 -- Advanced Reporting  (3 units)
Description:  Comprehensive and accurate news presentation, with emphasis on interview techniques and coverage of major news stories. Completion of this course with a grade of C or better also satisfies the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) requirement.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

JOUR 208 -- Law of the Press  (3 units)
Description:  Basic legal concepts for print, broadcast, online, and photojournalism, including access to courts, public records and meetings; subpoenas and shield laws; prior restraint; libel; privacy; source confidentiality; intellectual property; obscenity; and FCC regulations.

JOUR 317 -- From CNN to Stephen Colbert: Analyzing Television News  (3 units)
Description:  Course will analyze the current state of television news content. Students will explore why young people are moving away from traditional TV news programs and turning to pseudo-news shows like The Colbert Report and The Daily Show.

Description:  The course will investigate the intersection of journalism, gender and multiculturalism in the U.S. media. It will survey efforts to increase and improve diversity in the news media. Course will be offered online

JOUR 380 -- Television News Writing  (3 units)
Description:  Course is designed to teach students to write clear, concise broadcast new stories under deadline pressure; learn to write to video, including tape and graphics; and develop story ideas and cultivate critical thinking skills.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

JOUR 385 -- Beginning Television Reporting and Production  (3 units)
Description:  Course introduces students to television reporting and production and the ethical decision-making skills needed to success in the advanced TV course, JOUR 498C Arizona Cat's Eye.

Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.

JOUR 413 -- Reporting Public Affairs  (3 units)
Description:  Reporting Public Affairs. Study and practice of newsgathering on executive, legislative, and judicial levels in city, county, state and federal governments, with emphasis on both deadline writing and in-depth stories.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

JOUR 426 -- Reporting the Middle East  (3 units)
Description:  The course involves conducting journalism field work in Cairo, Egypt. Students will produce news stories for Egyptian and U.S. audiences. Students do not need to understand the Egyptian language.

JOUR 433 -- Computer-Assisted Reporting  (3 units)
Description:  Computer-Assisted Reporting teaches how to acquire, analyze and develop stories based on government resources, using Excel, Access, ArcView and other computer programs.

JOUR 439 -- Ethics and the News Media  (3 units)
Description:  Analysis of ethical theory and how it relates to journalists' roles and responsibilities in a democratic society. Case studies involve questions of bias, accuracy, privacy and national security.

JOUR 447 -- Government Secrecy: Access to Information in an Age of Terror  (3 units)
Description:  The course will focus on access to government records and meetings. From the perspective of the journalist acting on behalf of the people in a democracy, it will look at the benefits and harms caused by access to government information.

JOUR 485 -- Information Technology and Society  (3 units)
Description:  The course provides an analysis of emerging information technologies from a media literacy perspective. Special attention will be given to the study of Internet-related technologies. The goal is to develop a critical understanding of the application and effects of information technologies in society.

Description:  Students work as editorial staff to produce a local newspaper for Tombstone, Arizona. Intensive study of problems and responsibilities of community newspapers. Course requires 1 or more trips to Tombstone.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Description:  The course will give students experience in the management and production of an engaging and dynamic online publication that will showcase social, political and cultural topics.

Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

Description:  Analysis of ethical theory and how it relates to journalists' roles and responsibilities in a democratic society. Case studies involve questions of bias, accuracy, privacy and national security. Graduate-level requirements include a research paper examining a major ethical issue and providing a critique regarding how the media covered the issue.

JOUR 547 -- Government Secrecy: Access to Information in an Age of Terror  (3 units)
Description:  The course will focus on access to government records and meetings. From the perspective of the journalist acting on behalf of the people in a democracy, it will look at the benefits and harms caused by access to government information. Graduate-level requirements include the research paper being twice as long as the undergrad. It is expected to be of graduate-level quality, and pose a suitable research question that could lead to a later study.
