Family Study and Human Development (FSHV)  Department Info

FSHV 337 -- Dynamics of Family Relations  (3 units)
Description:  The modern family and its relationships with emphasis on marriage and interpersonal relationships.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  FSHD337
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: FSHV 337 or FSHD 337
Prerequisite(s):  FSHD 117, FSHD 137.

FSHV 377 -- Adolescence  (3 units)
Description:  Growth, development and socialization of the child from the middle school years through adolescence.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  FSHD377
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: FSHV 377 or FSHD 377
Prerequisite(s):  FSHD 117, PSYC 101.
Usually offered:  Spring, Summer.

FSHV 399 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

FSHV 401 -- Basic Skills in Counseling  (3 units)
Description:  Selected counseling skills and their applications. Designed for students needing basic skills in counseling as an adjunct to other primary occupational functions. Approved as: Interdisciplinary course in FSHD major--Advanced Complementary perspectives.

Prerequisite(s):  6 units of social sciences.

FSHV 405 -- Theories of Counseling  (3 units)
Description:  Techniques for the study of human behavior; implications for improving adult-child relationships, applying various theories of counseling.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

Prerequisite(s):  6 Units of social science.

FSHV 408 -- Program Planning and Evaluation  (3 units)
Description:  Basis for and process involved in developing and/or evaluation of individual and family focused programs for schools and communities.

FSHV 413 -- Issues in Aging  (3 units)
Description:  What challenges and opportunities do adults face as they age? What resources and barriers shape their lives? How do physiological, psychological, interpersonal, economic, and socio-historical factors affect the experience of aging? How do gender, social-class, and ethnicity influence the experience of aging? What are existing and optimal policies and services that affect the lives and well-being of older adults? What are effective ways of studying the aging process? How can theories and conceptual frameworks from the fields of psychology, sociology, family studies, anthropology, & biology/medicine help us to make sense of the aging process? These and other related questions reflect the major themes of this course. The course format will include a combination of readings, lecture, discussion, video case studies, guest speakers, in-class oral and written student participation, and an out-of-class written assignment. Students who successfully complete this course will have a strong empirical and conceptual knowledge base regarding issues in aging, and will be able to apply this critical understanding to their professional and personal experiences with older adults.

FSHV 427 -- Problems in Human Development and Family Relations  (3 units)
Description:  Identification and analysis of major problem areas in marriage and the family, including economic, sexual, role conflict, emotional disorders, and child rearing.

FSHV 428 -- Professional Presentations and Techniques  (3 units)
Description:  Theory and practice of educational methods in formal and non-formal settings in positions in business, government and human services.

FSHV 447 -- Advanced Human Development  (3 units)
Description:  In-depth examination of various dimensions of human growth and development.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); 6 units of psychology.
Typical structure:  1 hour lecture, 2 hours discussion.

FSHV 487 -- Advanced Family Relations  (3 units)
Description:  Critical analysis of selected studies and current research in family relations.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

FSHV 493 -- Internship  (1-12 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.

FSHV 494 -- Practicum  (1-8 units)
Description:  The practical application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and the collection of data for future theoretical interpretation.

FSHV 505 -- Theories of Counseling  (3 units)
Description:  Techniques for the study of human behavior; implications for improving adult-child relationships, applying various theories of counseling. Graduate-level requirements include an additional research paper dealing with a theoretical aspect of Adlerian psychology.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Typical structure:  2 hours lecture, 1 hour discussion.
May be convened with:  FSHV 405.
