E M 196H -- Honors Proseminar  (1 unit)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

E M 399 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

E M 493 -- Internship  (1-5 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.

E M 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.

E M 499 -- Independent Study  (1-5 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

E M 502 -- Introduction to Finite Element Methods  (3 units)
Description:  Theory and formulation procedures: energy and residual. One-dimensional problems: stress analysis in axial structures, steady and transient fluid and heat flow, consolidation, wave-propagation, beam-column. Two-dimensional problems: field and plane/axisymmetric, use of computer codes for solution to typical problems. Graduate-level requirements include research on a single aspect of the finite element method.

E M 504 -- Elasticity Theory and Application  (3 units)
Description:  General three-dimensional equations of elasticity; problems in plane stress, plane strain, extension, torsion; energy, residual and other solution methods; applications to rings, beams, plates, torsion and other problems.

E M 508 -- Fracture Mechanics  (3 units)
Description:  Modes of fracture; crack propagation; Griffith energy balance; crack tip plasticity; J-integral; fatigue cracks; analytical and numerical techniques; constitutive models for damaged materials.

Prerequisite(s):  E M 504 or A ME 564A.

E M 511 -- Advanced Finite Element Analysis  (3 units)
Description:  Approximation functions, Lagrangian and Hermitian interpolation, isoparametric elements and numerical integration; mixed, hybrid and boundary element methods, nonlinear analysis, nonlinear problems in solids under static and dynamic loads, time integration schemes, fluid and heat flow coupled problems and mass transport.

Prerequisite(s):  C E 402 or consult department before enrolling.

E M 593 -- Internship  (1-5 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.

E M 596A -- Research Topics  (1 unit)

Prerequisite(s):  may be repeated one time for credit when enrolled in the Ph.D. program.

E M 599 -- Independent Study  (1-5 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599, 699, or 799.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.

E M 604 -- Plasticity Theory and Application  (3 units)
Description:  Yield conditions and flow rules for perfectly plastic and strain hardening materials; application to various elastoplastic problems such as bars, cylinders and plates; effect of volume change behavior, isotropic and anisotropic hardening plasticity with expanding/contracting yield surfaces.

Prerequisite(s):  A ME564A, E M 603 or consult department before enrolling.

E M 606 -- Wave Propagation in Solids  (3 units)
Description:  Stress (acoustic wave propagation and dispersion in infinite solids and finite wave guides), application of wave propagation theory in destructive and nondestructive evaluation of materials and structures; dynamic failure behavior of materials. Usually offered every other Spring beginning 2003.

Prerequisite(s):  E M 603 or A ME 564A or A ME 564B.

E M 633 -- Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering  (3 units)
Description:  Vibrations and dynamic response of structural systems to periodic and arbitrary loadings and support motion; response spectrum and step-by-step formulations for seismic analysis and design.

E M 648 -- Constitutive Laws for Engineering Materials  (3 units)
Description:  Statement of axioms of continuum mechanics. Strain, stress and nonlinear behavior. Laboratory testing including hyperelasticity, hypoelasticity, rate type models, plasticity review, hardening, volume change and dilatancy, softening, inherent and induced anisotropy, laboratory testing and implementation.

E M 900 -- Research  (1-3 units)
Description:  Individual research, not related to thesis or dissertation preparation, by graduate students.

E M 909 -- Master's Report  (1-3 units)
Description:  Individual study or special project or formal report thereof submitted in lieu of thesis for certain master's degrees.

Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

E M 910 -- Thesis  (1-6 units)
Description:  Research for the master's thesis (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or thesis writing). Maximum total credit permitted varies with the major department.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P E K.

E M 920 -- Dissertation  (1-9 units)
Description:  Research for the doctoral dissertation (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or dissertation writing).

E M 930 -- Supplementary Registration  (1-9 units)
Description:  For students who have completed all course requirements for their advanced degree programs. May be used concurrently with other enrollments to bring to total number of units to the required minimum.
Grading:  a Grade of K is awarded for this course except for the final term.
