University-Wide House Numbered Courses

University-wide "house" numbers identify 3 categories of courses using alternatives to the usual teaching formats of lectures, discussions, and laboratories. Several house numbered courses also use alternative grading systems. The grading system(s) available for each course type are designated in the course description. Additionally, policies, guidelines, and procedures pertaining to each category are presented herein.

Departments tailoring a house-numbered course/title to their discipline and/or degree may not use the generic course description (listed within the categories below) and must submit a course title and brief catalog description specific to the course as part of the course creation/approval process.

Senior-level Research or Project Courses Undergraduate senior research or project courses are for (1) students pursuing majors which require a synthesizing project or paper as a part of completion of the major, and (2) Honors students completing the research and writing of their thesis. These courses are designated as 498 and 498H respectively.

498	Senior Capstone (Credit varies) For students pursuing majors which require a synthesizing project or paper. A culminating experience for students involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.	A, B, C, D, E regular grades or S, P, F alternative grades Regular or special grades may be used as departmental policy dictates; in any single class offering, all registrants must be graded by the same system. S, P, and F grades are NOT included in the GPA. Available for pass/fail option.
498H	Honors Thesis (3 units) An honors thesis is required of all students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis. May be repeated for credit 2 times (maximum 3 enrollments).	A, B, C, D, E regular grades

Small Group Courses These undergraduate and graduate courses are distinguished by the small group format. Courses are typically identified by numbers ending in 95, 96, and 97. The study area of these house-numbered courses is indicated through a subscript and subtitle.

195	First-Year Colloquium (1 unit) These courses, offered in a small group setting, are designed to give students insight into the concepts and practices which typify different academic disciplines. First-year colloquia introduce the methods and standards of the discipline for discovering new knowledge, the values which characterize the field of study, advances in the field, impact on society, and career opportunities. 295 395 495 595 695 795	Colloquium (Credit varies) The exchange of scholarly information and/or secondary research, usually in a small group setting. Instruction often includes lectures by several different persons. Research projects may or may not be required of course registrants. Colloquium courses with variable outcomes and topics must use *95 house numbers. Colloquium courses with permanent/fixed outcomes and topics are not restricted to house numbers. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers. Proseminar and Seminar courses with permanent/fixed outcomes and topics are not restricted to house numbers. 396H	Honors Special Topics Seminar (1 unit) A special topics seminar for Honors-active juniors and seniors. Course may include small group discussion, research on current issues or historical perspectives, guest speakers, and presentations on a variety of department-related topics of interest. 197 297 397 497 597 697 797	Workshop (Credit varies) The practical application of theoretical learning within a small group setting and involving an exchange of ideas and practical methods, skills, and principles. Individual Studies Courses Individual Studies Courses are taught on an individual basis. These courses have numbers ending in 91, 92, 93, 94 and 99, as well as all 900-level courses. Under their generic numbers and titles, these courses, with prior approval of the responsible faculty member, may be selected by a student in any major, even though the courses are not listed in the student's major departmental course offering section. Courses ending in 91, 92, 93, and 94 may be indicated through a subscript, subtitle, and a specific description.

493L 593L	Internship -- Legislative (493L 12 units, 593L 9 units) Working experience at the Arizona State Legislature; responsibilities draw upon student's area of major expertise and include preparing written and oral reports, summarizing legislative proposals, and providing information to legislators and legislative committees. Participating programs include but are not limited to: architecture, economics, English, geography and regional development, history, hydrology, journalism, management, management information systems, marketing, political science, psychology, public administration, secondary education, sociology, statistics, and urban planning. Students in other programs are eligible and should consult the department head or, in the case of the College of Law, the dean, for appropriate arrangements. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599, 699, or 799. 909	Master's Report (Credit varies) Individual study or special project or formal report thereof submitted in lieu of thesis for certain master's degrees.
910	Thesis (Credit varies) Research for the master's thesis (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or thesis writing). Maximum total credit permitted varies with the major department.
915	Master's Recitals (Credit varies) For master's students in music performance.
920	Dissertation (1-9 units) Research for the doctoral dissertation (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or dissertation writing).
925	Doctoral Recitals (1-9 units) For doctoral students in music performance.
