Introduction:

The Department of Computer Science is in the College of Science.

Computer science is the body of knowledge dealing with the design, analysis, implementation, efficiency and application of algorithmic processes that transform information.

The Baccalaureate Program:

The baccalaureate program prepares students for careers developing computer applications and computer systems in science and industry, and prepares students for graduate study in computing. The program has three components: the pre-major, supporting science courses, and the major. All students are admitted to The University of Arizona as pre-computer science majors. Formal application for admission to the major is required after completing the pre-major course work. Admission to the major in Computer Science is competitive and based on academic performance prior to application. The department Admissions Committee makes decisions based upon the student's overall UA record, with particular emphasis on the pre-major course work and any other computer science and math course work. To ensure admission, students should meet the following requirements prior to application:

  1. minimum of 3.000 cumulative GPA at The University of Arizona
  2. grades of A or B in all computer science and math courses
  3. demonstrated proficiency in theory
  4. demonstrated proficiency in programming
See the department's admission to the major section for more details.

Students should apply for admission to the major as soon as possible after completing the pre-major course work. Applications are due by September 1st for Fall semester and by February 1st for Spring semester.  Applicants who do not meet the formal criteria are considered on a case-by-case basis.  A student may apply to the program more than once.

The department participates in the honors program.
