Undergraduate Minor:

The Department:

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics is administered jointly by the College of Science and the College of Medicine.

The department provides the fundamentals for study of the molecular principles in biology, medicine, and the health sciences and agricultural sciences. Teaching and research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics are carried out in several locations in the University, with the main administrative offices and most professors located in Biosciences West.  These programs serve as an excellent background for graduate study in biochemistry or the many health-related sciences, including a major pre-professional program for qualification for professional schools of medicine, dentistry and osteopathy.

Graduate Degrees:

The department administers or participates in several different graduate degree programs.

The M.S. degree can also be awarded to students admitted to the Ph.D. programs who terminate early.

The department contributes to the M.S. in General Biology for Teachers, a program for middle and high school teachers who desire advanced, specialized training in the biological sciences. This M.S. is administered through Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics.

Students may follow a course leading to a Biochemistry Ph.D. through two different programs in which the department participates. These programs are the Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology Graduate Program, and the Biological Chemistry Program. A joint program, the Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology Ph.D., is jointly administered with Molecular and Cellular Biology.
