(1-16 units) Description: This elective is designed to offer a comprehensive introduction to podiatric medicine and surgery. The student will be able to: improve fundamental surgical skills (e.g., suturing, injections, minor surgery); perform a complete diabetic foot exam; properly debride lower extremity ulcers and formulate a wound care regimen; interpret foot and ankle x-rays; assist in the care of foot and ankle trauma; assist in the preoperative assessment, intraoperative treatment, and postoperative care of reconstructive surgical patients. -- Surgical & Non-surgical Management of Spine Disorders
(1-16 units) Description: Back pain is the second most common reason to visit a physician (the most common is a cold). This rotation will expose medical students to the common diseases that affect the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine through direct patient interactions in the clinic, hospital and operating room. Students will learn how to complete a proper spine history and physical exam including the musculoskeletal and neurologic exams, formulate a differential diagnosis and apply current treatment plans, both operative and non-operative, which are required to manage diseases of the spine. The Spine Institute has physicians that specialize in medicine and surgery which provide patients with comprehensive spine care. We also have a musculoskeletal rehabilitation program. This rotation is designed for all students interested in surgery, internal medicine, and family medicine. Comprehensive spine care is emphasized. Students will have the opportunity to get involved in research, both retrospective studies and prospective randomized studies on a volunteer basis. (1-16 units) Description: Course provides the student with an introduction to the management of the patient with severe multiple system disease in the surgical intensive care unit setting. Major emphasis will be placed on providing an understanding of the diagnosis and management of acute respiratory failure, fluid, electrolyte, cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Format: The experience will consist of a four-week assignment to the Critical Care Medicine Service. Students will work under the supervision of residents and fellows of this service and an attending physician. They will participate in patient consultations and follow-up, rounds and conferences. (1-16 units) Description: To grasp an understanding of vascular surgery by serving as a sub intern. Knowledge will be gained in clinical examination of vascular problems, interpretation of Duplex examination data as well as angiograms, patient selection for which type of revascularization procedures, the individual operative procedures by serving as a member of the surgical team, postoperative care, and long term outcome. There will also be didactic sessions on the vascular lab and ultrasound as well as application of those diagnostic modalities. Endovascular approaches will likewise be observed. (1-16 units) Description: To obtain an understanding of the immune system and its clinical suppression in order to allow organ transplantation. Experience will be gained in kidney and pancreatic transplantation and will include organ procurement, recipient selection and preparation, operative organ implantation, follow-up, and recognition as well as management of the various types of rejection phenomena. Some emphasis will be placed on vascular access for dialysis as well. There will also be participation in organ preservation in the ex-vivo state. (1-16 units) Description: The goals of this course are: 1.To learn the current biological/physiologic/social and psychological basis of morbid obesity as a disease. 2. To understand the contribution of each allied health team member in a comprehensive approach to morbid obesity. 3. To understand the indications for surgical treatment of morbid obesity and the preoperative evaluation and preparation of the patient for surgery. 4. To expose the student to the primary procedures used to treat the patient including gastric band and revision of previous procedures to gastric bypass.
5. To understand the optimal clinical pathway for morbid obese patient perioperatively. 6. To learn the appropriate post operative care of the morbid obese patient perioperatively. 7. -- Perfusion Science
(1-3 units) Description: This is the clinical applications course for the Perfusion major in The Graduate Program in Medical Pharmacology in the Department of Pharmacology. This course provides one-on-one clinical instruction in the operation of life support systems such as the heart-lung machine, intra-aortic balloon pump, and the artificial heart used during open-heart surgery. The students gain clinical experience with operation of the supportive coagulation and blood analysis point of care systems. The students gain this experience at five Tucson based hospitals including clinical cases of adult, pediatric, transplantation, and artificial cardiovascular support devices. The other component of this course is the weekly colloquium where the cases of the week are presented and discussed by the students. Grading: Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
