SOC 221 -- Health, Human Services and Public Management  (3 units)
Description:  This course will provide a general survey of significant issues in the health, human services and public management fields. Secondary emphasis will be placed on how policy is made and implemented in the three subject areas. The use of and interpretation of data and practical examples will be stressed.

Description:  Today's multicultural religious imagination is analyzed and explored by subjecting movies to sociological analysis.

SOC 333 -- Group Processes  (3 units)
Description:  Study of processes that form, maintain, and dissolve groups, including their objectives, cohesion, norms, role leadership and power structures, communication patterns, interpersonal relations, problem solving, and effectiveness.

SOC 336 -- Court Administration and Management  (3 units)
Description:  This three-unit, interactive course involves a study of various courts from limited magistrate to federal, with surveys of jurisdictional levels, administration, and personnel. Attention will be given to the function of courts, problems administering them and public perception. Specialized courts will also be discussed, e.g., drug court. In addition to judges, lawyers, and staff, the role of the civilian will be addressed, with studies of how these participants interact.

SOC 419 -- Culture and Society  (3 units)
Description:  This course explores the nature and sources of cultural differences, with a focus on international comparisons. We begin by examining the content of culture: symbolic systems, rituals, and beliefs. Next we concentrate on the production and distribution of cultural content by institutions such as media, schools, and organized religion. Then we study how people receive, use, and transform cultural content in daily life. Througout the course, we will evaluate competing explanations for how and why cultures differ.

Description:  Working experience at the Arizona State Legislature; responsibilities draw upon student's area of major expertise and include preparing written and oral reports, summarizing legislative proposals, and providing information to legislators and legislative committees.

Description:  The practical application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and the collection of data for future theoretical interpretation.

SOC 498 -- Senior Capstone  (3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

SOC 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

Description:  Science and technology are prominent features of contemporary society. The sociology of knowledge, science, and technology are rapidly growing and increasingly important areas of inquiry in the social and behavioral sciences, arts, and humanities. This seminar will be an opportunity to read very broadly across social and political theory and its relations to science (both the natural and social) and knowledge.
