All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. PORT 101 -- 1st Semester Portuguese  (4 units)
Description:  Communicative approach, emphasis on all language skills. Recommended for students with no previous experience with the language.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit and grade.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

PORT 102 -- 2nd Semester Portuguese  (4 units)

PORT 305A -- Portuguese for Spanish Speakers  (3 units)
Description:  Accelerated beginning Portuguese for speakers of Spanish. Taught by communicative approach and contrastive analysis.

Prerequisite(s):  3 years of college Spanish, native proficiency, the equivalent, or consent of department.

PORT 325A -- Intermediate Grammar and Conversation  (3 units)
Description:  For intermediate students to enhance their linguistic abilities, to develop control of oral communication at a more advanced level, and to prepare for the transition from language learning to studies in literature, culture and linguistics.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.

PORT 350 -- Introduction to Genres and Literary Analysis  (3 units)
Description:  Introductory course in literary reading and analysis based on texts from the Portuguese-speaking countries.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  PORT 206 or equivalent.

PORT 397R -- Portuguese Language Skills and Culture  (6 units)
Description:  Portuguese language and culture in an immersion context. Offered only in Fortaleza, Brazil. Recommend one year of Portuguese or the equivalent.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  PORT 102, PORT 305 or consent of department.

PORT 401 -- Luso-Brazilian Literature - 1900  (3 units)
Description:  Overview of literary periods and introduction to the major literary figures of Portugal, Brazil and the Luso-African countries (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Porto Principe) from the beginning of their literature to 1900.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  PORT 325A or equivalent.

PORT 403 -- Contemporary Luso-Brazilian and Lusophone African Literatures: an Introduction  (3 units)
Description:  Through an interdisciplinary approach, the students will be in contact with the contemporary literature producd in Brazil, Portugal and Lusophone Africa.

PORT 414 -- Teaching of Modern Languages  (3 units)
Description:  Specific methods, objectives, organization of subject matter and evaluation in modern languages.

PORT 425 -- Advanced Grammar, Composition, and Writing Skills  (3 units)
Description:  For more advanced students to increase comprehension of written Portuguese, to practice written skills, and to prepare for transition from language learning to the study of literature.

Prerequisite(s):  PORT 325A or equivalent.

PORT 430 -- Brazilian Civilization  (3 units)
Description:  Broad survey of Brazilian culture. Thematic examination of some of the major cultural developments. Topics include: Brazilian music, Afro-Brazilian culture, the role of women in Brazilian society, Brazilian popular culture.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  PORT 325A or equivalent.

PORT 440 -- Portuguese Phonetics and Phonology  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to Portuguese articulatory phonetics and phonology for the purpose of exploring the theory and the practice of pronunciation. Comparison with Spanish and English patterns. Discussion of geographic, social and diachronic variation. Practice of pronunciation and transcription of sounds.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
May be convened with:  PORT 540.

PORT 449 -- Brazilian Literature in Film  (3 units)
Description:  Presentation of the masterpieces of Brazilian literature and the great films based upon them.

Prerequisite(s):  PORT 325A or equivalent.

PORT 463 -- Topics in Luso-Brazilian Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Representative topics include: major works, authors and tendencies in the literature of the Portuguese speaking countries (Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Cape Verde, Mozamabique, Guin-Bissau, Porto Principe).
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  PORT 325A.
May be repeated:  for credit 3 times (maximum 4 enrollments).

PORT 497R -- Advanced Intensive Portuguese and Brazilian Culture  (6 units)
Description:  Portuguese language and culture in an immersion context. Offered only in Fortaleza, Brazil. Recommended one year of Portuguese or the equivalent. skills, and principles.

PORT 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

PORT 501 -- Luso-Brazilian Literature-1900  (3 units)

PORT 540 -- Portuguese Phonetics and Phonology  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to Portuguese articulatory phonetics and phonology for the purpose of exploring the theory and the practice of pronunciation. Comparison with Spanish and English patterns. Graduate-level requirements include 15-20 page resarch paper, presentation of the results to class, and demonstration of greater depth and sophistication in their tests and homework.

PORT 696M -- Sexuality and International Migration  (3 units)
Description:  The course examines sexuality as the site where multiple concerns about international migration (including social, cultural, political, economic and national) are expressed and contested, in the context of globalization and transnationalism.
