PHCL 195C -- The Meaning of Life  (1 unit)
Description:  Instruction often includes lectures by several different persons, usually in a small group setting. Designed to give students insight into the concepts and practices which typify different academic disciplines, and introduce students to the methods and standards of the discipline for discovering new knowledge, the values which characterize the field of study, advances in the field, impact on society, and career opportunities.  This is a First-Year Colloquium Course.

Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

PHCL 445 -- Drugs of Abuse  (3 units)
Description:  Pharmacology and toxicology of abused drugs with emphasis on mechanisms of drug action, theories of addiction, involvement of AIDS and the immune system and treatment approaches.

PHCL 501A -- Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics  (3 units)
Description:  Action of chemical agents upon living material at all levels of organization with emphasis on mechanisms of action of prototype drugs used to treat diseases/disorders of the renal, cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. Foundation for a rational approach to human therapeutics and toxicology.

PHCL 551A -- Molecular Targets of Pharmacological Agents  (3 units)
Description:  This course presents the current approaches and biotechnology for rational drug design and the discovery and validation of novel drug targets. Current drugs on the market will be used to illustrate the molecular pharmacology and underlying mechanisms of drug action.

PHCL 554 -- Cardiovascular Pharmacology  (3 units)
Description:  Modern theories of mechanism of action of cardiovascular drugs, prophylaxis and therapy of cardiovascular disease.

PHCL 582 -- Immunotoxicology and Immunopharmacology  (3 units)
Description:  Broad overview of the immune system, with emphasis on how chemicals affect the immune system (immunomodulation) and the role of the immune system in chemical-induced tissue injury/allergic responses.

PHCL 586A -- Introduction to Medical Pharmacology Research  (1 unit)
Description:  Introduction to basic research techniques in pharmacology through supervised laboratory rotations; student-initiated and faculty-structured lab exercises emphasizing modern pharmacological techniques of importance to medical pharmacology.

PHCL 595B -- Scientific Writing Strategies, Skills and Ethics  (2 units)
Description:  Provide students with skills to write/communicate effectively for a variety of scientific audiences; including scientific journals, funding institutions, potential employers as well as administration in academia and industry.

PHCL 596C -- Critical Literature Review & Research Seminar  (1 unit)
Description:  To develop skills of students to critically read, evaluate and present scientific literature or laboratory results, especially related to medical pharmacology. Every week, students will present and exchange scholarly information in a small group setting.

PHCL 599 -- Independent Study  (2-4 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599,699 and 799.

PHCL 620 -- Principles of Pharmacology  (3 units)
Description:  Basic principles of the actions of drugs and of intercellular communication; drug-receptor theory; absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs; autonomic physiology and pharmacology; principles of laboratory investigation in pharmacology and toxicology.

PHCL 653 -- Neuropharmacology/Drugs of Abuse  (3 units)
Description:  Role of various neurochemicals in the peripheral and central nervous systems and the effects of drugs on the nervous system, including their actions at receptors and their influence on synthesis, storage, and release of neurotransmitters.

PHCL 670 -- Principles of Perfusion Techniques I  (3 units)
Description:  An introduction to basic extracorporeal techniques through discussion of blood propelling devices, heat transfer, gas transfer, bio-materials, and perfusion pharmacology.

PHCL 672 -- Perfusion Technology II  (2 units)
Description:  This course will provide classroom study of Perfusion technology. The areas of study will provide expanded discussion of the topics covered in PHCL 670 and PHCL 671.

PHCL 891A -- Pharmacology  (3-12 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of instruction and practice in actual service in a department, program, or discipline. Teaching formats may include seminars, in-depth studies, laboratory work and patient study.

PHCL 891L -- Perfusion Science  (1-3 units)
Description:  This is the clinical applications course for the Perfusion major in The Graduate Program in Medical Pharmacology in the Department of Pharmacology. This course provides one-on-one clinical instruction in the operation of life support systems such as the heart-lung machine, intra-aortic balloon pump, and the artificial heart used during open-heart surgery. The students gain clinical experience with operation of the supportive coagulation and blood analysis point of care systems. The students gain this experience at five Tucson based hospitals including clinical cases of adult, pediatric, transplantation, and artificial cardiovascular support devices. The other component of this course is the weekly colloquium where the cases of the week are presented and discussed by the students.
