All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. LAT 101 -- Elementary Latin I  (4 units)
Description:  An introduction to the basic grammar, syntax and vocabulary of Latin through reading and composition.

LAT 102 -- Elementary Latin II  (4 units)
Description:  Second semester Latin.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  LAT 101.

LAT 112 -- Accelerated Latin I  (6 units)
Description:  Equivalent of LAT 101 and 102. Covers all basic grammar and syntax.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  previous language experience or consult department before enrolling. Credit allowed for only one of LAT 112, LAT 101, LAT 102.
Usually offered:  Summer.

LAT 199 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.

LAT 201 -- Intermediate Latin I  (4 units)
Description:  Review of Latin grammar with readings from Cicero and other prose writers.

LAT 202 -- Intermediate Latin II  (4 units)
Description:  Readings from Ovid, Virgil and other Latin poets.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E. Available to qualified students for Pass/Fail Option.
Prerequisite(s):  LAT 201.

LAT 212 -- Accelerated Latin II  (6 units)
Description:  Equivalent of LAT 201 and 202. Reading and composition, prose and poetry.

LAT 401 -- Latin Reading Course  (3 units)
Description:  Readings in one of the following: epic, lyric, drama, history, oratory, satire, epistles, novel, philosophical, technical or medieval literature.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); LAT 400.

LAT 403 -- Late Antique Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Selections from genres and/or authors, both Christian and non-Christian, from the late antique period.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

LAT 405 -- Latin Composition  (3 units)
Description:  Analysis of Latin prose style, review of Latin grammar, practice in composing Latin prose.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

LAT 413 -- Augustan Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Readings from a major writer or writers of the Augustan age.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

LAT 414 -- Medieval Latin  (3 units)
Description:  Survey of Latin literature during the thousand years between the end of the classical period and the beginning of the Renaissance. Readings in Latin.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

LAT 415 -- Latin Love Elegy  (3 units)
Description:  Reading in the Latin texts of Ovid, Tibullus and Propertius.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

LAT 425 -- Cicero  (3 units)
Description:  The life of Cicero illustrated by means of close reading of selected works in Latin.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

LAT 426 -- Roman Historians  (3 units)
Description:  Readings in Latin from the Roman historians and biographers. May be repeated without duplication of readings.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

LAT 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

LAT 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
May be repeated:  for a total of 9 units of credit.

LAT 579 -- Issues/Methods in Post-Second Foreign Language Teaching/ Learning  (3 units)
Description:  Methods of post-secondary foreign language pedagogy. Discussion of broader issues of second language acquisition learner variables, including learning styles; the history of foreign language, education standards for foreign language learning and post-secondary teaching as a career.
