FSHD 223 -- Infancy/Child Development  (3 units)
Description:  Growth, development, and socialization of the child within the family setting, from conception to the middle school years; observations of infants and preschoolers.

FSHD 223L -- Child Development Laboratory Experience  (1 unit)
Description:  The goal of the laboratory experience is to create opportunities for students to observe the developmental phenomenon they are reading and hearing about in class. Though all of these students were themselves children, and some have regular experience interacting with children, there currently exists a disconnect between what students learn through their texts or lecture and systematically observing what children say or do. By experiencing children’s social, emotional, language, or motor development first hand, the concepts taught in class should become clearer and relevant. The laboratory experience is designed to make up for this deficit in the course and provide training in observing and recording young children’s behaviors.

FSHD 392 -- Directed Research  (1-6 units)
Description:  The goal of this course is to prepare undergraduate students to work on faculty research projects. Time will be spent on Human Subjects Protection certification, research ethics, a general training in data collection, basic data analyses, and report writing. The course is intended as a first step for students who are interested in the opportunity to acquire research experience and who may wish to pursue graduate programs or career tracks where research training is needed.

FSHD 415 -- The Design of the Mind: Genes, Adaptation, and Behavior  (3 units)
Description:  Part I: Basic mechanisms of behavioral evolution, genetics, and natural selection, as well as other factors impinging on the evolutionary process. Part II: Historical approaches that converge upon the broadly defined research program of behavioral evolution, theoretical perspectives, and empirical contributions made by each of these approaches, and current controversies in the field, framed as a single integrated area of study in which multiple approaches and perspectives can contribute to a comprehensive understanding.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Description:  This course will focus on the ways in which law defines and regulates families. Specific areas to be considered include, marriage and non-marital relationships, parental relationships, laws regulating family obligations, and laws governing the dissolution of marriage. The course will consider the evolving nature of "family" and the ways in which law and public policy affects how and with whom we live our lives.

Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

FSHD 498H -- Honors Thesis  (1-3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

FSHD 583A -- Developmental Psychopathology  (3 units)
Description:  This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the field of Developmental Psychopathology. Developmental Psychopathology is an approach to studying psychopathology in different stages of development, with a special focus on factors that contribute to the emergence of psychopathology and factors that protect against the emergence of psychopathology. Graduate-level requirements include a term paper (literature review) in addition to two exams and a project/presentation (with no opportunity for extra credit).

Description:  This course covers analysis of dyadic and small-group data. Students will learn the conceptual and mathematical bases of these approaches; formulate and evaluate models of interdependence; gain experience in writing results of interdependent data analyses; and apply these skills to research in FSHD.

FSHD 617C -- Advanced Topics in Data Analysis: Multilevel Modeling  (3 units)
Description:  This course provides an introduction to Multilevel Modeling (MLM) and its implementation using SAS PROC MIXED. MLM is used for analyzing clustered data, such as longitudinal data (multiple observations nested within individuals) or data arising from couples or families (individuals nested within families).
