All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. Description:  Practice in writing short fiction.

ENGV 306 -- Advanced Composition  (3 units)
Description:  Study of genre and rhetorical situation; advanced practice in expository writing.

Description:  Analysis and presentation of scientific and technical information.

ENGV 310 -- Studies in a Literary Genre  (3 units)
Description:  The origin and evolution of one of the following literary genres: the novel, lyric poetry, science fiction and fantasy, the short story.

ENGV 370A -- English Literature: From Old English to Renaissance Literature  (3 units)
Description:  A survey, with emphasis on major writers in their literary and historical contexts from Old English to Renaissance literature.

Description:  A survey, with emphasis on major writers in their literary and historical contexts from Restoration to modern literature.

ENGV 380 -- Literary Analysis  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the various modes, techniques, and terminology of practical criticism.

Prerequisite(s):  Completion of freshman composition sequence; priority given to English, Creative Writing and English Education majors and minors. Concurrent registration, ENGL 373A (for English majors).

ENGV 396A -- Junior Proseminar  (3 units)
Description:  This junior-level proseminar introduces students to methods and materials of literary research. Content of individual seminars will vary, based upon instructor.

Prerequisite(s):  ENGL 373A, ENGV (ENGL) 380; priority given to English majors. Concurrent registration, ENGL 373B (for English majors).

ENGV 399 -- Independent Study  (1-4 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

ENGV 404 -- Advanced Fiction Writing  (3 units)
Description:  This is a Writing Emphasis Course for the Creative Writing Major. Discussion of student stories in a workshop setting.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); ENGL 304. Repeatable with written consent of Creative Writing Advisor.
May be repeated:  for a total of 6 units of credit.

ENGV 405 -- History of the English Language  (3 units)
Description:  The evolution of English sounds, inflections, and vocabulary from earliest times to the present, with attention to historical conditions.

ENGV 411 -- Teaching of Literature  (3 units)
Description:  Theory and practice of teaching literature, with intensive study of genres and works commonly taught in secondary schools.

Prerequisite(s):  9 units of literature or consent of instructor. Priority given to English Education majors and minors.

ENGV 417A -- Topics in the Teaching of English  (1-3 units)
Description:  Students will develop a philosophy of teaching English and transform theory and core course content into pedagogy by preparing teaching portfolios, developing teaching units and lesson plans that include writing assignments, and applying principles of curriculum design.

Description:  Analysis of selected writings by women, as well as representations of women in literature, with attention to social and intellectual contexts.

ENGV 496A -- Studies in Authors, Periods, Genres and Themes  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.
