ARE 361 -- Creative Arts Methods  (3 units)
Description:  Prepares elementary education students to teach art in the self-contained classroom. Various art education methodologies through participating in classroom activities; planning art lessons; presenting art lesson to the class. Class is meant to build on the theoretical base each student has already acquired in previous art classes.

Description:  Exploration, development, and critical analysis of pedagogical practices in art and visual culture education.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

ARE 434 -- Diversity Issues in Art and Visual Culture Education  (3 units)
Description:  Multicultural cross-cultural issues, gender and social justice issues within art and visual culture education.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Description:  Theories, issues, and practices of thinking, talking, writing, and teaching about art in relation to culture.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

ARE 496A -- Current Issues in Art Education Theory and Practice  (3 units)
Description:  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); upper division standing.

ARE 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

ARE 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.

Description:  Exploration, development, and critical analysis of pedagogical practices in art and visual culture education. Graduate-level requirements include an in-depth research paper on a single aspect of current scholarly interest.

ARE 534 -- Cross-Cultural Issues in Art and Visual Culture Education  (3 units)
Description:  Multicultural cross-cultural issues, gender and social justice issues within art and visual culture education. Graduate-level requirements include a choice of either developing a curriculum unit/project based on some aspect of multicultural art education, research and writing a ten-page paper related to a multicultural topic, or conducting a small multicultural research project.

ARE 538 -- Teaching Art and Visual Culture, Wildcat Art  (3 units)
Description:  Integrating art and visual content in education classrooms. Develop lesson plans, build community skills, teach in classrooms. Graduate-level requirements include the student to 1) exercise leadership through chairing a committee, and 2) work as a team in developing a curriculum framework for lesson planning and organization of Saturday School. Grading standards are higher.

Description:  Examination of curriculum & instruction theories, issues and practices related to art and visual culture education. Graduate-level requirements include students facilitating a one-hour class session. Graduate papers are expected to be more in-depth and scholarly. Graduate grading expectations are higher.

Description:  For students who have completed all course requirements for their advanced degree programs. May be used concurrently with other enrollments to bring to total number of units to the required minimum.
