TTE 195A -- Introduction to the Profession of Teaching  (1 unit)
Description:  Current issues in K-12 teaching and their application to classroom instructional practices and procedures.  This is a First-Year Colloquium Course.

TTE 197A -- Freshman Success Class  (1 unit)
Description:  Retention studies have shown that students who feel a greater sense of connection with their college are more likely to stay in school and graduate. Students can develop this sense of connection by becoming involved in college life and in their academics. This class will help Pre-Education students begin to develop a sense of connection to the College of Education, the University, and to the teaching profession. Students will learn about the College of Education’s programs and services; have the opportunity to meet faculty members; learn about resources and services at the UA that promote retention; develop a deeper understanding of the teaching profession; gain experience in classroom observation; develop a graduation plan; and learn about the application process to the College of Education. This class combines class activities and discussions with out-of-class learning experiences, along with personal reflection and readings

TTE 300C -- Classroom Process + Instruct: Guidance in Early Childhood Settings  (4 units)
Description:  Nature and teaching and learning to teach; understanding early childhood classroom systems-guidance and management of young children; student motivation; understanding the many dimensions of student diversity; planning for instruction-especially with regard to developmentally appropriate practices: major philosophical orientations that influence classroom instruction and the major theorists; teaching through presentation; direct instruction and assessment; concepts teaching and discussion; elements of play and the major role of play in early childhood settings, cooperative learning and problem based (inquiry) instruction; working in schools; forming and fostering parental partnerships. Will engage in a 45 hour field observation.

TTE 302 -- Educational Applications in Museum Anthropology  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to museum education and anthropology of the Southwest which examines cultural diversity of the region. Students conduct museum tours for public school students.

Description:  Nature and functions of schools in society; school reform proposals; moral dimensions of schooling; equality of educational opportunity; alternatives to schooling; nature of teaching profession.

TTE 350C -- Schooling in America: Foundations of Early Childhood  (3 units)
Description:  Schooling in America: Foundations of Early Childhood, deals with the nature and functions of schools in society, with a particular focus on early childhood educational agencies; school reform proposals; moral dimensions of schooling; equality of educational opportunity and meritocracy; alternatives to schooling; issues facing state early education programs and school districts; and the nature of the teaching profession (among other topics). This course considers as major themes/orientations the history of schooling/education in the United States (a critical analysis of early childhood historical perspectives); the philosophical foundations of education/schooling, and the social/cultural/economic/political/legal contexts of education/schooling in America. All sections of TTE 350C require 20 hours of off campus field observation per semester. TBA once semester begins.

TTE 397A -- Phonics in the Reading and Writing Curriculum  (2 units)
Description:  Expands the elementary education reading and writing methods course by offering in-depth exposure to the systematic relation between orthography and phonology in the English language and to teaching methods for incorporating phonics instruction into classroom and writing practices.

Pass/fail grades are the only grades available for TTE 493A and TTE 493B. Enrollment in these courses will not reduce the amount for which a student can otherwise enroll under the pass-fail option.

Description:  This course is designed for aspiring life scientists and science teachers. It will improve students' literacy in the areas of life science data management, information technology, and the effective exchange of scientific information across disciplines and professional cultures.

Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

TTE 498H -- Honors Thesis  (3 units)
Description:  An honors thesis is required of all the students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis.
