Winter 07/Spring 08 Course Descriptions

All courses below are approved to be taught in Winter 2007 and Spring 2008; however, some (or all) may not be offered in either term.  The courses that are offered in Spring link to the Schedule of Classes.  Classes with alternative External Link delivery modes (Web based, cable TV, correspondence, etc) are noted in the Schedule at the section level.  The complete list below is a good indicator of what may be offered over the next few years (contact department about offerings).  For explanations of course elements see the Key to Course Descriptions.

MEDP 801 -- Prologue  (2 units)
Description:  The goals of the Prologue are higher order learning objectives including adoption of professional values, internalization of motivation for learning, appreciating the richness and ambiguity of medical knowledge, examining doctor-patient communication, and taking on management of personal health. Prologue is designed to explicitly demonstrate that doctoring functions at the interface of science and humanism, and that the skilled practitioner must be facile in both of these domains.
Grading:  Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K.
Prerequisite(s):  Phoenix Medical Students Only.
Typical structure:  1 hour lecture, 1 hour discussion.

MEDP 802 -- Biomedical Informatics  (1 unit)
Description:  Recognizing that the essence of the physician’s effectiveness in the future will flow in large part from information management and mastery, the Biomedical Informatics block is designed to familiarize students with the principles and practice of biomedical informatics. It includes instruction on computer basics, ethical and legal issues, imaging and clinical use of portable computing devices.

MEDP 803 -- Molecular Basis of Life and Disease  (5 units)
Description:  The Molecular Basis of Life and Disease Block teaches basic clinical skills as well as the fundamentals of human biology, mechanisms of disease, and therapeutics in a context that fosters development of skills in evidence-based decision making, self-directed learning, communication, and professionalism. The block is designed to provide the student with the basic science background knowledge required for subsequent blocks.

MEDP 804 -- Clinical Anatomy  (2 units)
Description:  The Clinical Anatomy Block will introduce students to the structure of the human body as it applies to the practice of medicine. Students will perform dissections on human cadavers in order to appreciate the three dimensional relationships of the organ systems. The block is integrated with other system blocks and two parallel longitudinal blocks, Doctoring and Longitudinal Clinical Experience, in which students will learn clinical skills with further development of clinical thinking and communication skills.

MEDP 805 -- Capstone  (3 units)
Description:  The goals of the Capstone experiences are to integrate clinical experiences into the basic science organ system blocks of the first two years and to provide time for student remediation and additional assessment, as needed.

Typical structure:  2 hours individual studies, 1 hour discussion.

MEDP 806 -- Mechanisms of Integration: Nervous, Endocrine, and Immune Systems  (9 units)
Description:  This block incorporates instruction on three systems which integrate responses to internal and external environmental stimuli: the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. Utilizing this theme, instruction in all three systems and their interactivity is provided in an integrated fashion to highlight important underlying concepts. It includes overviews of general principles in neuroscience, neuropathology, clinical neuroanatomy (facilitating the linkage of structure and function), neurology, psychiatry, immunology and endocrinology.

MEDP 807 -- Longitudinal Clinical Experience  (2 units)
Description:  The goals of the course are to provide supervised experience seeing continuity patients in a longitudinal clinical setting. This course augments the Doctoring course by allowing students to practice clinical skills (physical exam, medical interview and medical reasoning). Additionally, the development of clinical thinking and communication skills is stressed.

MEDP 808 -- Doctoring  (2 units)
Description:  The goals of the course are to provide instruction in clinical skills (physical exam, medical interview and medical professionalism) along with the integration of these clinical skills with basic science principles. Additionally, the development of clinical thinking and communication skills is stressed.

MEDP 809 -- Learning Community  (3 units)
Description:  Students will participate in a longitudinal Learning Community to learn about core topics including critical thinking, information literacy, ethics and medical humanities, biomedical informatics and research methodologies. A central aim of the course is to integrate the scholarly activity, clinical experience, and basic sciences components of the curriculum.

MEDP 810 -- Scholarly Project  (2 units)
Description:  The Scholarly Project is intended to expose each student to an in depth research project over a four year period, from inception to completion. This will afford the student to develop skills in accrual and evaluation of new data, an appreciation for the methods by which new scholarly information is generated, and skills for critical thinking and lifelong learning.

MEDP 812 -- Musculoskeletal System  (3 units)
Description:  The Musculoskeletal System Block covers the structures of the upper and lower extremities and spine with a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the fundamental tissues of bone, joint, muscle, and ligaments. The goals are to enable students to learn how the normal and abnormal mechanisms of development and disease of these structures are relevant to pediatrics, geriatrics, traumatic injury and rehabilitation. In this manner, students will be introduced to common diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
