MEDI 596L -- National Health Care Systems  (1 unit)
Description:  This seminar course will compare US healthcare delivery systems with the national health care systems of 12 other industrialized nations. Each of these 12 nations has a health care system that covers all or nearly all of its citizens. Each nation is a member of OECD which has collected comparative health care data on each country since 1960.

MEDI 673 -- Epidemiology of Aging  (3-4 units)
Description:  This is a course in the principles and methods of epidemiology as applied to the study of aging. It assumes basic knowledge of pathophysiology, and epidemiological and biostatistical methods. Major research issues in the Epidemiology of Aging as well as the methods to study them will be presented and discussed. This course will examine concepts including: Trends in aging and the health of aging populations; Health transition, and explanations and consequences of mortality decline; Determinants of health and survival; Distinctions between healthy aging, disease and disability; Health promotion and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, as applied to older persons; The epidemiology of selected diseases, syndromes and conditions common to old age; The aged health care continuum and how different types of care/ health care systems are used in prevention, intervention and treatment, and supportive care; Special concepts and key methodological considerations for conducting epidemiologic studies of older persons (e.g., cohort effects, age-specific rates, age standardization, use of proxies, appropriate measures, adjusting for comorbidities, and longitudinal analyses), and Practical and ethical issues in the aged as research subjects

MEDI 800C -- Research - Cancer  (1-18 units)
Description:  The approach to scientific investigation will be emphasized. No previous research experience is necessary. MEDI 800D -- Clinical Oncology Research  (1-16 units)
Description:  Goals: In this elective didactic program in benign hematology, students will work with members of the Hematology/Medical Oncology Section at the Arizona Cancer Center in the outpatient facility at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Campus. The student will learn the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for hematologic and oncologic disease through direct patient contact. In addition, clinical experience will be supplemented by a clinical care (tumor board) conference and a weekly research teleconference with Tucson. Direct mentoring with two Hematology Oncology specialists will make this a very "hands on" experience.

MEDI 800M -- Introduction to Molecular Biology Research  (1-16 units)
Description:  Goals: This class is a workshop-based tutorial designed to familiarize the students with research applications utilizing molecular and cellular biology techniques. Selected techniques used in contemporary research papers will be explained, and in some cases, demonstrated or performed by the students in a laboratory. Upon successful completion, the students will be able to perform basic recombinant DNA techniques, and will demonstrate greater understanding of the literature.

MEDI 803 -- Clinical Clerkship  (12 units)
Description:  Required of all students during their first clinical year. Emphasis is placed upon learning a core curriculum and the development of clinical skills, problem solving and the provision of compassionate and humanistic medical care. Students are expected to obtain and record the complete medical histories, perform physical examinations, develop appropriate differential diagnoses and monitor the progress of assigned patients. Students will participate in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with other members of the patient care team and attend required departmental conferences and seminars.

MEDI 815P -- Critical Care Medicine  (1-16 units)
Description:  Goals: To provide the student with an introduction to the management of the patient with severe multiple system disease in the surgical intensive care unit setting. Major emphasis will be placed on providing an understanding of the diagnosis and management of acute respiratory failure, fluid, electrolyte, cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Format: The experience will consist of a four-week assignment to the Critical Care Medicine Service. Students will work under the supervision of residents and fellows of this service and an attending physician. They will participate in patient consultations and follow-up, rounds and conferences.

MEDI 815T -- Hospice Care for the Terminally Ill  (1-16 units)
Description:  To acquaint students with disease processes and their physical manifestations in terminal illness (cancer, AIDS, and other end-stage disease). To expose students to an interdisciplinary approach which includes the physician and the hospice team. Emphasis is on helping patients and families cope with terminal illness. This would include home care and inpatient settings. To provide a knowledge base for clinical assessments, pain and symptom management. To offer students communication skills to present hospice as an option for patients and families when curative measures are no longer effective.

MEDI 816E -- Clinical Rotation in End of Life Care  (1-16 units)
Description:  Students will participate in patient evaluations in the inpatient hospice and palliative care unit with various team members, and homecare hospices. Students will participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, discuss significant ethical issues, and demonstrate clinical problem solving and competency at initial and ongoing consults for the hospice and palliative patient admitted. They will round daily with the team on the hospice in-patients. Direct clinical experience will be supplemented by lectures, e.g. pain management and other hospice and palliative care topics listed in curriculum, and relevant readings. The faculty will supervise all activities.

MEDI 816F -- Interventional Cardiology/Research  (4-6 units)
Description:  Goals: 1 - Perfect skills in cardiac interventional diagnosis and treatment. 2 - Master cardiac history and physical examination techniques. 3 - Participate in interventional procedures and both device and drug research. Current projects include gamma radiation catheter and VEG-F therapy.

MEDI 816I -- Geriatric Medicine/Internal Medicine Elective  (1-16 units)
Description:  Goals: Upon successful completion of this elective, students will be able to do a comprehensive history and physical examination of a complex geriatric patient and will become familiar with the geriatric giants (delirium, dementia, falls, urinary incontinence and polypharmacy).

MEDI 816J -- Hematology/Oncology In-Patient Care  (1-16 units)
Description:  Goals: Students will acquire an in-depth understanding of the management of patients with hematological and oncological illness requiring in-patient therapy; gain a better understanding of the clinical needs of the cancer patient; improve their diagnostic skills; and improve their differential diagnoses assessments with respect to the patient who presents with a blood disorder or a suspected tumor.

MEDI 816K -- Care of the Older Adult  (1-16 units)
Description:  To provide the student with a clinical and community-based experience with older adults. Emphasis will be placed on the multifaceted aspects of aging as well as the interdisciplinary approach to geriatric care. Students will be exposed to a continuum of care from the least restrictive to most restrictive environments. Format/Methods by which the course will be offered: Students will work under the direct supervision of a geriatrician/gerontologist as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. The continuum of care will be provided in both institutional and community based settings. The experience will address cross-cultural aspects of aging, health promotion, and the maintenance of functional abilities. Students will be exposed to home care, a comprehensive geriatric evaluation clinic, assisted living, and hospice care. Students may focus on areas of interest that include rural health, community-based care, optimal aging, and home visits with elders.
