R SS 299 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

R SS 374 -- The Holocaust  (3 units)
Description:  Socio-economic and intellectual roots of modern anti-Semitism, evolution of Nazi policy, the world of death camps, responses of Axis and Allied governments, and responses of the Jews.

R SS 421 -- History of Russia: Early Period  (3 units)
Description:  Political, socio-economic, and cultural history of Russia in medieval and early modern times.

R SS 422 -- History of Russia: Modern Period  (3 units)
Description:  Political, socio-economic, and cultural history of Russia in the modern era until the Bolshevik Revolution.

R SS 424 -- The Modernization of Russia, 1856-1935  (3 units)
Description:  Social history of Russia from the emancipation of the serf to the establishment of the Stalinist system.

R SS 425 -- History of the Soviet Union  (3 units)
Description:  The Bolshevik Revolution and problems of Soviet and Russian history from 1917 to the present.

R SS 443 -- Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics  (3 units)
Description:  Surveys the Leninist system and the transition to post-Soviet institutions and norms. Focus on decision-making and models of autocracy and pluralism. Particular attention to Russia, but overview of other post-Soviet successor states.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE); POL 202.

R SS 451 -- Soviet and Post-Soviet Foreign Policy  (3 units)
Description:  Surveys traditional Soviet foreign policy, Gorbachevian "new thinking," and post-Soviet policy directions. Attention to decision-making process and Soviet and post-Soviet relations with European, North American, and Third World countries. Focus on Russia, but overview of other post-Soviet successor states' foreign policies.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
