LA S 207A -- Latin American Studies-Nahuatl Language  (3 units)
Description:  This course is intended to introduce the student to modern varieties of the Nahuatl language, especially although not exclusively represented by those spoken in the Balsas region in Mexico.

LA S 248 -- Latin American Politics Through Film  (3 units)
Description:  In this course we will view a variety of films and television programs that portray central features of Latin American political life. The films will address a variety of contemporary political issues across Latin America. The goal when studying each film will be to address a series of questions as political scientists.

LA S 251 -- World Regions: Comparative and Global Perspectives  (3 units)
Description:  Survey and comparison of major world regions with a foucs on how global processes, regional interconnections, and local geographic conditions create distinctive regions and landscapes.

LA S 301 -- Translation and Interpretation: Social Justice and Practice  (3 units)
Description:  Professional, social justice, sociolinguistic, & cognitive aspects of Translation & Interpretation. Includes language policy and social justice goals to providing language services for limited and non-English speaking populations, role of translators & interpreters, simultaneous & consecutive interpretation, role of norms in legal translation, meaning of translation, health care interpretation & translation, business & technical translation, observation of professional settings, translation and interpretation practice. Description:  This course begins the in-depth study of simultaneous interpretation (continued in Advanced Simultaneous Interpretation). Its focus is (1) building conceptual knowledge in legal/medical/business contexts and (2) language and interpreting competence. Description:  This course examines the history of the oldest colonial territory of the United States. We will study Puerto Rico as an example of U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America and as an island with a long history of confrontation with foreign occupiers.

LA S 337 -- Survey of Mexican Folk Music  (3 units)
Description:  Examination of the traditional folk music of Mexico. Covers the history and evolution of the mariachi as well as the vast potpourri of Mexican music tradition. A working knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.

Description:  In this course the history of Chilean nation-building from the early colonial roots to the 21st Century will be analyzed. Focus is on political, social, and cultural histories of the country, giving attention to the unique characteristics of Chilean national developments. At the same time, connecting its historical idiosyncrasies to larger regional characteristics and to the trajectory that shaped Latin American developments from colonial encounters, to independence, to contemporary challenges.

Description:  The course encompasses the greater Southwest, including northern Mexico from preColumbian times to the present. Evidence from archaeology, ethnology, linguistics, and biological anthropology is integrated. Emphasis is placed on the interaction of Indian, Hispanic, and Euroamerican peoples and their adaptation to and exploitation of the natural environment through time.

Description:  Studies of selected topics in Latin American music in social context, with emphasis on shared patterns of transmission, development and reception. Case studies of musical genres, styles and historical periods, from pre-conquest to contemporary pop and folkloric to classical. Description:  This course examines the historical context against the theoretical, cultural, political, social, and economic elements of sudden revolutionary upheaval. Revolutions from the French Revolution of 1789 to the Cuban Revolution of 1959 will be studied. Graduate-level requirements include additional reading material, some in the original language; additional writing; meeting separately with the instructor for more level appropriate discussion and analysis.

Description:  The objective of the course is to make students aware of Economical, Technological, Managerial and Organizational aspects associated with offshoring of knowledge-based professional services. The course will achieve this through case discussions of different delivery models (captive center, joint venture, 3rd party), value addition models (low-end, mid-range, high-end), and the impact of business and policy environments to each of these models.
