Senior-level Research or Project Courses

Undergraduate senior research or project courses are for (1) students pursuing majors which require a synthesizing project or paper as a part of completion of the major, and (2) Honors students completing the research and writing of their thesis. These courses are designated as 498 and 498H respectively.

498 Senior Capstone
(Credit varies)  For students pursuing majors which require a synthesizing project or paper. A culminating experience for students involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.

S, P, C, D, E  alternative grades

Regular or special grades may be used as departmental policy dictates; in any single class offering, all registrants must be graded by the same system.  S and P grades are NOT included in the GPA.

Available for pass/fail option.

498H Honors Thesis
(3 units)  An honors thesis is required of all students graduating with honors. Students ordinarily sign up for this course as a two-semester sequence. The first semester the student performs research under the supervision of a faculty member; the second semester the student writes an honors thesis. May be repeated for credit 2 times (maximum 3 enrollments).

Small Group Courses

These undergraduate and graduate courses are distinguished by the small group format.  They are identified by numbers ending in 95, 96, and 97. The study area of such courses is indicated through a subscript and subtitle.

195 First-Year Colloquium
(1 unit)  These courses, offered in a small group setting, are designed to give students insight into the concepts and practices which typify different academic disciplines. First-year colloquia introduce the methods and standards of the discipline for discovering new knowledge, the values which characterize the field of study, advances in the field, impact on society, and career opportunities.

Colloquium
(Credit varies)  The exchange of scholarly information and/or secondary research, usually in a small group setting. Instruction often includes lectures by several different persons. Research projects may or may not be required of course registrants.

Proseminar and Seminar
(Credit varies)  The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the results of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers.

(Credit varies)  The practical application of theoretical learning within a small group setting and involving an exchange of ideas and practical methods, skills, and principles.

Individual Studies Courses

(Policy revised 5/2/08:  changes to grading system and links to policies & guidelines)

Individual Studies Courses are taught on an individual basis.  These courses have numbers ending in 91, 92, 93, 94 and 99, as well as all 900-level courses.  Under their generic numbers and titles, these courses, with prior approval of the responsible faculty member, may be selected by a student in any major, even though the courses are not listed in the student’s major departmental course offering section.  Courses ending in 91, 92, 93, and 94 may be indicated through a subscript, subtitle, and a specific description.

Preceptorship  
(Credit varies)  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of instruction and practice in actual service in a department, program, or discipline. Teaching formats may include seminars, in-depth studies, laboratory work and patient study.

Internship -- Student Teaching
(Credit varies)  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.

Internship -- Legislative
(493L 12 units, 593L 9 units)
Working experience at the Arizona State Legislature; responsibilities draw upon student's area of major expertise and include preparing written and oral reports, summarizing legislative proposals, and providing information to legislators and legislative committees. Participating programs include but are not limited to: architecture, economics, English, geography and regional development, history, hydrology, journalism, management, management information systems, marketing, political science, psychology, public administration, secondary education, sociology, statistics, and urban planning. Students in other programs are eligible and should consult the department head or, in the case of the College of Law, the dean, for appropriate arrangements.

Practicum

900-Level Individual Studies Courses

900 Research
(Credit varies)  Individual research, not related to thesis or dissertation preparation, by graduate students.
S, P, C, D, E, K  alternative grades

S and P grades are NOT included in the GPA. The grade of K (course in progress) may be awarded by the instructor when the course continues for longer than one semester.

908 Case Studies
(Credit varies)  Individual study of a particular case, or report thereof.
S, P, E, K  alternative grades

S and P grades are NOT included in the GPA.  The grade of K (course in progress) may be awarded by the instructor when the course continues for longer than one semester.

909 Master's Report
(Credit varies)  Individual study or special project or formal report thereof submitted in lieu of thesis for certain master's degrees.
910 Thesis
(Credit varies)  Research for the master's thesis (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or thesis writing). Maximum total credit permitted varies with the major department.
915 Master's Recitals
(Credit varies)  For master's students in music performance.
920 Dissertation
(1-9 units)  Research for the doctoral dissertation (whether library research, laboratory or field observation or research, artistic creation, or dissertation writing).
925 Doctoral Recitals
(1-9 units)  For doctoral students in music performance.
930 Supplementary Registration
(1-9 units)  For students who have completed all course requirements for their advanced degree programs. May be used concurrently with other enrollments to bring the total number of units to the required minimum.

The grade of K is awarded for each term except the final term; the final term is awarded a grade of CR.
