Surgery (SURG)  College Info

SURG 499 Independent Study (1-6) Students will learn about interdisciplinary research topics and techniques spanning the behavioral and health sciences. The research is aimed at improving the quality of healthcare by better understanding the processes of clinical judgment and decision-making and their effects on patient outcomes. They will accomplish this by administering questionnaires, chart review, database management, data analysis, and other research procedures. Grading will be based on successful completion of tasks above and the ethical treatment of human subjects.

SURG 816E Surgical Critical Care (4) To provide the student with an introduction to the management of the patient with severe multiple system disease in the intensive care unit setting. Major emphasis will be placed on providing an understanding of the diagnosis and management of acute respiratory failure including ventilator management, fluid and electrolyte disorders. P, 3rd-year surgical clerkship.

SURG 816F Orthopaedic Trauma (4) Goals: To familiarize the student with musculoskeletal injuries: evaluation, ambulatory care, and operative care. P, SURG 803.

SURG 816G Vascular Surgery (4) To grasp an understanding of vascular surgery by serving as a sub intern. Knowledge will be gained in clinical examination of vascular problems, interpretation of Duplex examination data as well as angiograms, patient selection for which type of revascularization procedures, the individual operative procedures by serving as a member of the surgical team, postoperative care, and long term outcome. There will also be didactic sessions on the vascular lab and ultrasound as well as application of those diagnostic modalities. Endovascular approaches will likewise be observed. There will also be experience in methods and indications for anticoagulant therapy. P, SURG 801.

SURG 816H Orthopaedics (1) Goals: Upon successful completion of this elective, students will have become exposed to self-selected specialties such as trauma, musculoskeletal oncology, foot and ankle surgery, sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, and reconstructive surgery. The student will learn the basics of the individual orthopedic disease processes, methods of evaluation, and methods of management. P, SURG 803.
