MEDI 800M Introduction to Molecular Biology Research (4) Goals: This class is a workshop-based tutorial designed to familiarize the students with research applications utilizing molecular and cellular biology techniques. Selected techniques used in contemporary research papers will be explained, and in some cases, demonstrated or performed by the students in a laboratory. Upon successful completion, the students will be able to perform basic recombinant DNA techniques, and will demonstrate greater understanding of the literature. 6L, 2R.

MEDI 803 Clinical Clerkship (1) [Rpt./] I II Required of all students during their first clinical year. Emphasis is placed upon learning a core curriculum and the development of clinical skills, problem solving and the provision of compassionate and humanistic medical care. Students are expected to obtain and record the complete medical histories, perform physical examinations, develop appropriate differential diagnoses and monitor the progress of assigned patients. Students will participate in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with other members of the patient care team and attend required departmental conferences and seminars.

MEDI 816E Clinical Rotation in End of Life Care (4) Students will participate in patient evaluations in the inpatient hospice and palliative care unit with various team members, and homecare hospices. Students will participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, discuss significant ethical issues, and demonstrate clinical problem solving and competency at initial and ongoing consults for the hospice and palliative patient admitted. They will round daily with the team on the hospice in-patients. Direct clinical experience will be supplemented by lectures, e.g. pain management and other hospice and palliative care topics listed in curriculum, and relevant readings. The faculty will supervise all activities. P, students must complete MEDI 803.

MEDI 816F Interventional Cardiology/Research (4-6) Goals: 1 - Perfect skills in cardiac interventional diagnosis and treatment. 2 - Master cardiac history and physical examination techniques. 3 - Participate in interventional procedures and both device and drug research. Current projects include gamma radiation catheter and VEG-F therapy. P, 4th year medical student.

MEDI 816G Rheumatology and Metabolic Bone Disease (3-6) Goals: Upon successful completion of this elective, students will be able to: evaluate new patients by performing histories and physical examinations appropriate to rheumatology and metabolic bone diseases; plan diagnostic work-ups and therapeutic interventions; consult on the modification of treatment plans on follow-up patients that the student sees with the attending rheumatologist (Arizona Rheumatology Center).

MEDI 816H Geriatric Outpatient Primary Care Clinic (3-6) Goals: This elective will provide the student an opportunity to acquire a basic foundation in geriatric medicine that includes: improving the student's knowledge of normal and abnormal aging; managing both acute and chronic problems; dealing with ethical dilemmas.

MEDI 816I Geriatric Medicine/Internal Medicine Elective (4) Goals: Upon successful completion of this elective, students will be able to do a comprehensive history and physical examination of a complex geriatric patient and will become familiar with the geriatric giants (delirium, dementia, falls, urinary incontinence and polypharmacy).

MEDI 896P Survey of Chinese Medicine (2) II Goals: Upon successful completion of this elective, students will: be familiar with the terminology and theory used by practitioners of Chinese Medicine; have gained a deeper understanding of patients's reasons for pursuing this form of intervention; understand the specific qualifications required for practitioners of Chinese Medicine; be able to explain the different schools of thought in Chinese Medicine taught in the U.S.; have learned about the safety and efficacy of Chinese Medicine; have gained a technical and experiential introduction to Acupuncture; understand the basics of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulation and the common tonic herbs.
