LAW 636 Professional Responsibility of Tax Attorneys (1-3) II The course will focus on the special ethical and professional responsibilities of those lawyers who are engaged in federal tax practice, all derived from the Internal Revenue Code, U.S. Treasury Department Regulations, and the standards and traditions of the legal profession and the tax bar. In addition, we will examine the relationships developing between lawyers and accountants in so-called multi-disciplinary practice, both their possibilities and problems.

LAW 651 Environmental Justice (2-3) I II Explores issues of justice in the context of environmental law and policy. It considers whether environmental burdens are evenly distributed; whether governmental decision makers adequately take into account the circumstances of communities of color and low income communities in setting environmental standards; and whether the institutions of environmental law and policy provide equal access to all. It examines the role of the law in remedying the inequalities of deficiencies identified.

LAW 677 Statutory Interpretation (2) I II This course will consider a subject that has stimulated great scholarly and professional interest in recent years; the role of the courts in the interpretation of statutes. After an overview of basic themes, we will focus on such questions as: theoretical approaches to the task of interpretation; the significance of background norms and of "canons of construction"; the relevance of context; the treatment of legislative history; the relationship between courts and administrative agencies; problems of obsolescence; and the oroper limits of judicial creativity in reading and applying statutory texts.

LAW 697O The Corporation in Thought and Practice (2-3) II The seminar will place the development of corporate law and theory during the 20th century in a broad intellectual milieu. Particularly, we will attempt to discern the relationship between the development of different visions of the corporation and a variety of economic, social and political concerns. After a brief review of corporate law in the 19th century, the first part of the term will be devoted to the rise of modern corporation and the transformation of democratic theory during the turn of the 20th century (1880s-1930s). During the later part of the course, focus will be made on developments in corporate law since the 1960s. Exploring the ways in which contemporary approaches to corporate law (law and economics, critical legal studies or communitarian visions) draw on earlier paradigms.

LAW 697P Comparative Commercial Law (3) II This course will examine the different approaches taken to commercial law in several representative legal systems, including the United State Uniform Commercial code. The implications for international commercial transactions will be examined and explored.

LAW 697S Law and Political Theory (2-3) I II This course will cover the history of legal and political theory from antiquity through the Middle Ages, to the modern period and thereafter and will focus on debates in political philosophy that address legal issues; law versus equity, natural law, positivism, inalienable rights, rights theory and the critique rights of the rule of law debate, and contemporary issues in jurisprudence.

LAW 697T Natural Resources Law (2-3) I II This course examines the management of specific resources found on public lands; wilderness, timber, water, wildlife, grazing, minerals. It will also analyze the interrelated roles of various branches of government in determining the use of public lands.

LAW 697W Accounting for Lawyers (1) This course will introduce law students to the basic concepts of accounting and finance. Topics include: introduction to generally accepted accounting principles, the basic components of financial statements, basic concepts of accounting, basic principles of valuation including the time value of money and the legal and professional responsibilities of accountants and lawyers in the auditing process.

LAW 697Z Patent Practice (2) I II This course would instruct students in all aspects of patent applications. It would build on the theoretical concepts covered in Patent Law and involve both analysis of sample (existing) patent applications and drafting of new ones. The key elements of patent applications will be emphasized and detailed examination of the requirements of a successful patent application undertaken.
