Epidemiology (EPI )  Dept Info - College Info

EPI 546 Biobehavioral Approaches to Cardiovascular Health & Illness (3) [Rpt./ 1] S The course has two major themes: a) biobehavioral antecedents of cardiovascular-related diseases and b) biobehavioral interventions in the prevention and management of these diseases. Included will be lifestyle (e.g. diet, exercise, smoking), individual characteristics (e.g. psychosocial traits, personality, and differences in physiological reactivity), social, environmental and stress-related factors (e.g. SES, occupation, ethnicity, social support, and quality of life). All of these factors have received epidemiological research attention. The course is designed to give a scientific overview and status evaluation of biobehavioral accomplishments, opportunities and future directions for research and clinical application within these categories. Some areas will receive more coverage than others depending on the quality of the scientific work available and the interests of the students. (Identical with PHL 546, PSYC 546).

EPI 573A Basic Principles of Epidemiology (3) [Rpt./ 1] II Course will introduce students to the basic concepts and principles of epidemiology and how these concepts are applicable for their own particular interests and careers in epi related fields. P, EPI major or minor, MPH major, or consent of instructor. (Identical with PHL 573A).

EPI 573B Epidemiologic Methods (3) II This course will increase the student's understanding of research methods in epidemiology and provide practice for the epidemiology student to design research studies and review other epidemiologic research designs. P, EPI 573A, EPI 576A and P, or CR, EPI 576B. (Identical with PHL 573B).

EPI 573C Advanced Epidemiology (3) I An advanced course in quantitative issues that arise in the planning, analysis, and interpretation of epidemiologic research studies. Students must also know who to use a statistical software package (eg. STATA). P, EPI 573A, EPI 573B, EPI 576A, EPI 576B and advanced standing. (Identical with PHL 573C).

EPI 576A Biostatistics in Public Health (3) I II This course introduces biostatistical methods and applications, and will cover descriptive statistics, probability theory, and a wide variety of inferential statistical techniques that can be used to make practical conclusions about empirical data. Students will also be learning to use a statistical software package (STATA). P, one year of college-level mathematics. (Identical with PHL 576A).

EPI 576B Biostatistics for Research (3) II Descriptive statistics and statistical inference relevant to biomedical research, including data analysis, regression and correlation analysis, analysis of variance, survival analysis, biological assay, statistical methods for epidemiology and statistical evaluation of clinical literature. P, EPI 576A, EPI 573A. (Identical with PHL 576B).

EPI 576C Applied Biostatistic Analysis (3) [Rpt./ 1] S Integrate methods in biostatistics (EPI 576A, B) and Epidemiology (EPI 573A, B) to develop analytical skills in an epidemiological project setting. P, EPI 576A, EPI 576B, EPI 573A, EPI 573B or consent of instructor. (Identical with PHL 576C).

EPI 594 Practicum (1-5) [Rpt./] I II

EPI 599 Independent Study (1-5) [Rpt./] I II

EPI 615A Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention (3) I An overview of the current issues and methods in cancer epidemiological studies. Issues and methods used in cancer surveillance, international studies, observational studies, and intervention trials will be covered. P, EPI 573A; P, or CR, EPI 576A. (Identical with PHL 615A, CBIO 615A, RONC 615A).

EPI 615B Cancer Control (3) II P, EPI 615A, EPI 573A. (Identical with PHL 615B, RONC 615B).

EPI 640 Psychosocial Epidemiology (3) II An advanced graduate seminar that examines psychosocial stress and sociobehavioral factors in disease causation and prevention; with a behavioral epidemiolgical approach to the study of cancer, coronary heart disease, and HIV disease (stress concept and stress theory, etc.). P, EPI 573A and EPI 573B. (Identical with PHL 640).

EPI 645 Nutritional Epidemiology (3) [Rpt./ 1] II An overview of the current issues and methods in assessing nutritional status in epidemiological studies. Issues and methods used in international studies and of chronic disease nutrition will be covered. P, EPI 573A. Statistics helpful. (Identical with NUSC 645, PHL 645).

EPI 660 Infectious Disease Epidemiology (3) II Introduction to epidemiologic methods used in infectious disease investigations. An emphasis will be placed on understanding the relationships between the host, the parasite and the environment as they relate disease causation. P, EPI 573A; P, or CR, EPI 573B, EPI 576A. (Identical with ENTO 660, PHL 660, V SC 660).
